Men’s Tennis Team Finishes Weekend Tournaments Across the Country

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team was in action this weekend as it competed in the River City Tennis Open in Richmond, Va., the Holmes Cathrall Memorial Invitational in University Park, Pa., and the San Diego Tennis Classic in San Diego, Calif.

Navy's doubles teams each posted 2-2 records during the tournament hosted by Penn State.  Tommy Kim and Charlie Spencer defeated Buffalo's Minjae Kim and Theodoris Mitsakos by the score of 6-3 and won a 6-4 decision over the Columbia duo of Jakub Katuch and Junghe You.  The Mids very nearly won a third match as they fell, 7-6 (7-4) to the Penn State pair of Reiya Hattori and David Lindsay.

Lachlan Buckingham and Jake Young first defeated the Buffalo tandem of Onder Balci and Michael Malkin, 6-4, and went on to win a 6-1 match over Cornell's Jack Casciato and Nathan Gold.

Among the singles results, Buckingham defeated Columbia's Tristan Lee, 6-3, 6-4, Spencer won a 7-6 (9-7), 6-1 decision over Jaden Brady of Penn State and Young defeated Columbia's Junghee You, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

San Diego Veterans Tennis Classic
George Cutone posted a 2-1 singles record during the event.  Cutone's first victory was a 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 win after his opponent, UCI's Mason Bui, retired early in the third set, with his second win being a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Washington's Brett Pearson.

In doubles, Aniketh Ayinala teamed with J.J. Etterbeek for a 6-3 victory over Oregon's Declan Galligan and Russell Soohoo.

Etterbeek also defeated UC Irvine's Nathaniel Suh, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1), Herrick Legaspi registered a 6-4, 6-2 win over Suh's UCI teammate Greg Gamal and Ayinala defeated Washington's Daniel Bien, 6-4, 6-4.

River City Tennis Open
The Navy doubles team of Ethan Garcia and Zachary Quattro registered a 6-4 victory over Richmond's Austin Cohen and Nathan Germino.  Garcia would earn a 6-4, 6-1 singles win over Bryan Volk of William & Mary, while Quattro received a singles win over Hampton's Kohei Konishi when Konishi retired after winning the first set, 6-4, and being tied in the second set, 4-4.

Nathan Nguyen recorded a singles win over Aurelien Schmitt of James Madison, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, Zach Giertz defeated Hampton's Benjamin Mwana, 6-0, 6-2, and Jason Kim tallied a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Liam Kilmer from Bucknell.

Kim also teamed with Steve Nguyen for a 6-4 victory over Volk and his William & Mary teammate Nikita Bortnichek, while Gu and Nathan Nguyen defeated Cole Brashear and Otto Sewell of Richmond, 6-4.

Lots more tennis is ahead of the Mids this week as they will play in the ITA Atlantic Regional Championship in Blacksburg, Va., the Navy Gold Invite in Annapolis and the Commander-in-Chief's Challenge in Arlington, Va.  The ITA Championship begins Thursday with the additional two tournaments starting Friday.
