ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team recorded its fourth-straight doubleheader sweep on Saturday as the Mids (8-2) registered a 6-1 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson (2-2) and a 6-1 win over Villanova (0-4) at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis.
Fairleigh Dickinson would win the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead over Navy in the team's first match of the day. The Knights won the first match to finish at the No. 2 flight, then the Mids evened the proceedings with a win at No. 3 doubles by the tandem of
Jason Kim and
Nathan Nguyen. The match at No. 1 doubles would go into a tiebreaker where FDU's Thomas Linley and Gryffin Minor defeated Navy's
Luke Garner and
Herrick Legaspi, 7-6 (11-9).
The Mids bounced back to win the first four singles matches to finish in straight sets on their way to sweeping the six matches. Winning in straight sets were, in order of finish,
Tommy Kim at No. 6 (6-1, 6-2),
Jake Young at No. 1 (6-3, 6-1),
J.J. Etterbeek at No. 5 (6-1, 7-5) and
George Cutone at No. 4 (6-4, 7-5). Legapsi and Garner would win three-set matches at Nos. 3 and 2 singles, respectively.
The doubles point went to Navy in the second match of the day against Villanova. The Mids earned wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles to win the point.
Aniketh Ayinala and
Charlie Spencer teamed for a 6-3 win at the former flight while
Aaron Gu and
Tommy Kim combined for a 6-4 victory at the latter.
Young dropped just one game in winning at No. 2 singles to make the score 2-0. After a win at the No. 6 flight by the Wildcats,
Jason Kim tallied a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles.
Nathan Nguyen followed with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles to give the Mids their match-clinching fourth team point.
Completing the day were wins by
George Cutone at No. 3 (6-1, 6-2) and Ayinala at No. 4 (6-2, 6-3).
Navy will play two matches next weekend in Annapolis and two in Orlando, Fla. The Mids will play host to Hofstra (Friday) and Hampton (Saturday) in Annapolis and face Florida Gulf Coast (Friday) and Air Force (Saturday) at the USTA Tennis Center in the Sunshine State.
