Navy Hits the Road for West Chester 7s Tournament

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's rugby team will travel to West Chester, Pa., to participate in the West Chester 7s Tournament this Sunday. The first match is set to begin at 10 a.m.

Last Time Out: Navy 7s
Navy earned a 28-12 victory over Mount St. Mary's to close out action at the Navy 7s Tournament held last Sunday at the Prusmack Rugby Center in Annapolis. 

The Mids opened the day by being edged by Queens, 12-10, before they dropped a 28-7 decision to LIU.

Ella Callahan led the team with two tries, including a try in the winning match against Mount St. Mary's.

Mia Young led all Midshipmen in total scoring with 15 points throughout the three matches. She scored five conversion kicks and a try against the Mountaineers.

Scouting West Chester

  • West Chester opened the spring at the Frostbite 7s Tournament on March 2. The Golden Rams posted a 2-0 record with victories over Walsh (26-5) and Kutztown (59-0).
  • West Chester placed second at the Navy 7s in Annapolis last weekend with a 3-1 record. The Golden Rams defeated Mount St. Mary's (17-12), Princeton (28-5) and LIU (22-19) before falling in the finals to Queens (22-19).
  • The team finished with a 5-4 overall record during the 15s season last fall.

Scouting Princeton
  • The Tigers began their 7s season last weekend at the Navy 7s. Princeton ended the day with a 2-2 record as it defeated Mount St. Mary's (21-7) and West Chester's No. 2 team (42-7).
  • The team finished in ninth place in the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) Conference with a 1-6 league record during the 15s season.
  • The Mids and Tigers met back in October when Navy escaped with a 24-19 victory in Annapolis.

Scouting Quinnipiac
  • Quinnipiac will be competing in its first 7s tournament this season.
  • The Midshipmen and the Bobcats squared off during the fall season with Quinnipiac getting the upper hand, 38-3. The Bobcats boasted a 4-3-2 overall mark during the 15s season.
  • Quinnipiac tallied a 2-3-2 record in NIRA play to finish in sixth place in the conference standings. The Bobcats' conference victories came against Navy (38-3) and Princeton (62-19).

Scouting Frostburg State
  • Frostburg State is competing in its first 7s tournament this season on Sunday.
  • The Bobcats had their first winning season in program history in the fall as they posted a 5-4 record.
  • The Mids handed Frostburg its first loss of the 15s season with a dominating 59-5 victory.
