Top-Seeded Mids Defeat Terriers in League Tournament Opener

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Four different players won matches as the Navy men's tennis team posted a 4-0 victory over Boston University, Friday morning in the quarterfinal round of the Patriot League Tournament in Lewisburg, Pa.  The victory by the top-seeded Mids (23-14) over the ninth-seeded Terriers (1-14) advances them to a Saturday semifinal round match where they will play either fourth-seeded Army or fifth-seeded Colgate.

Navy started today's match with a 1-0 lead due to Boston fielding only five players on its roster, which meant the No. 6 singles match was defaulted by the Terriers to the Mids.  The No. 3 doubles match also was defaulted by Boston, which meant Navy had to won only one of the two doubles matches to earn the point and make the score 2-0.  Navy's No. 1 team of Luke Garner and Jake Young recorded a 6-0 win over Gabe Brown and Jonah Dickson to secure the point and the 2-0 advantage.

Navy's Herrick Legaspi and Charlie Spencer held a 4-1 lead over Jaydon Barki and Cole Knutsen at No. 2 doubles in the remaining match.

"We had a good start in doubles with both of our teams coming out strong," said Navy head coach Chris Garner.

The Mids won the first set in three of the five singles matches.  J.J. Etterbeek was the first to finish a match as he posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Barki at No. 5 singles.    Moments later, Nathan Nguyen defeated Knutsen, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 2 flight to give Navy its fourth team point and close play.

Young was close to finishing his No. 4 singles match as he held a 6-2, 4-0 advantage on Ege Topkoc when play was stopped.

"J.J. and Jake got out to quick starts in their matches," said Garner.  "Nathan played better and better as his match progressed to get us the fourth team point."

In the other matches, Legaspi led Brown, 2-6, 6-1, 1-0, at No. 1 singles while Garner and Dickson were heading into a third set at No. 3 singles.  Dickson won the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4) and Garner earned a 6-2 victory in set two.

Saturday's semifinal match will start at 10 a.m.
