#21 Women’s Lacrosse Soars Past American, 17-5

Needing 14 draws controls to tie the single-season school record, Alyssa Daley registered 17 draws to set the new program mark with 194.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No. 21 Navy women's lacrosse team (12-5, 7-2 Patriot League) closed out the regular season with a 17-5 road win at American (5-11, 1-8 Patriot League) on Thursday afternoon at Jacobs Recreation Complex in Washington, D.C. Senior draw specialist Alyssa Daley entered the game needing 14 draw wins to tie her own school record of 191 that she set a year ago. She finished with 17 draw controls to set the new record with 194 this season.

"This was great win for Navy women's lacrosse," head coach Cindy Timchal said after the game. "From the draw to our ride, we played with purpose. The team stayed connected, engaged, and honored our standard. It was a great Navy win."

Daley finished the game with 17 draw controls, giving her 10 double-digit draw performances this season. She has notched 10 or more draws in the last six games, tallying 101 draws in that stretch. Led by Daley, the Midshipmen won 19 of 25 draws in the game.

Winning the draws helped put the Midshipmen in a good position offensively. The Mids saw 11 players find the back of the net en route to 17 goals as a team. Alyssa Chung led the team with five goals. It was the eighth hat trick for the freshman in Patriot League play and gave her 39 goals against conference opponents (4.33 goals per game). Tori DiCarlo and Mikayla Williams chipped in a pair of goals apiece, while Maggie DeFabio, Caroline Gage, Emma Kennedy, Lola Leone, Kat McAteer, Emily Messinese, Taylor Miles, and Ava Yovino each added scores. Miles led the team with two assists with DiCarlo, McAteer, and Yovino also adding helpers.

Defensively, Navy caused 12 of American's 22 turnovers. In addition, the Midshipmen disrupted the AU transition game, leading to 13 unsuccessful clear attempts by the Eagles (11-of-24). Landen Cain, Gage, and Yovino led the charge with two caused turnovers apiece, while Felicia Giglio, Chung, Leone, Messinese, and Miles also added takeaways. Six players – DeFabio, Gage, Giglio, Leone, Messinese, and Yovino – recorded multiple ground balls in the game.

At goal, Giglio and Emma Richardell combined for six saves and five goals allowed. Giglio worked 49 minutes in the cage, making four stops, while Richardell closed out the final 11 minutes with a pair of saves.

For American, Maddy Spratt led the way with two of the team's five goals and added an assist for a team-high three points. Spratt was credited with three of AU's five draw wins. Goalie Caleigh Forti allowed 17 goals, while recording 18 saves and recording a team-high three ground balls in the loss.

The Mids took control of the game in the first half. Navy opened the scoring with goals by Chung and Williams to go ahead 2-0. Following an Eagles goal, the Mids went on a 7-0 run that spanned into the second quarter to push the advantage to 9-1. Chung added three goals in the run, with DeFabio, DiCarlo, Kennedy and Williams finding the back of the net in the run. AU closed out the half with a pair of goals, but the Mids led 9-3 at intermission.

Navy started the second half with back-to-back goals by DiCarlo and Yovino to extend the lead to 11-3. The Eagles scored a goal, but the Midshipmen countered with six straight goals to put the game out of reach. Miles and Messinese each scored to give the Mids a nine-goal advantage, 13-4. McAteer converted a free-position opportunity to put Navy up by double-digits and start the running clock. Chung closed out the third quarter with her fifth goal of the game. Leone and Gage found the back of the net for the Midshipmen in the fourth quarter to put Navy ahead, 17-4. Spratt scored the final goal of the game for American to provide the final margin of 17-5.

The Midshipmen return home to host a Patriot League Tournament Quarterfinal game against an undetermined opponent on Sunday, April 27 at 12:00 p.m. at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The game will be the broadcast on ESPN+, aired on WNAV, and live stats will be available.
