Navy Opens Postseason Play at 7s Collegiate Championship

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's rugby team begins the postseason at the 7s Collegiate Rugby Championship (CRC) Women's Premier Cup this Saturday and Sunday at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md.

The Mids earned the No. 5 seed in the Premier Cup west bracket and will face No. 4 West Chester in the first round on Saturday at 10:40 a.m. The winner will advance to the quarterfinals later in the day and face either top-seeded Brown or eighth-seeded Adrian. The losers of those two first-round matches will play in the consolation bracket.

Tickets for the championships are available HERE. Kids 12 and under will receive free admission with the purchase of any adult ticket.

Tournament Breakdown
The Women's Premier Cup will feature 16 teams separated into the east and west brackets.

The eight teams eliminated in the opening round will be placed in the Bowl bracket where they can finish as high as ninth place. Teams that lose in the first round of the Bowl bracket will be placed in the Shield bracket and will battle for 13th and 15th place.

Teams eliminated in the quarterfinals will be moved to the Plate bracket to play for fifth place.

The losing teams in the semifinals will go head-to-head for third place.

Navy Against the Field
Navy holds a 5-3 record during the 7s season against teams in the CRC with victories over fourth-seeded West Chester (25-12; 50-0) and seventh-seeded Mount St. Mary's (28-12; 38-0; 24-7).

The Mids' three losses came to the Golden Rams (21-17), second-seeded Queens (12-10) and fifth-seeded Wheeling (26-19).

The tournament features four National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) foes in Army, Brown, Mount St. Mary's and Queens.

Navy in the 7s CRCs
Navy boasts a 5-3 record in the 7s CRCs as a varsity program. The Mids went 3-1 in last year's championship and finished in third place with a 14-10 victory over American International.

Navy's inaugural season (2022-23) as a varsity program was capped off with a fourth-place finish at the CRCs as the Mids posted a 2-2 record in the tournament.

Mia Young led the team in scoring (15) and tries (3) in the tournament last season.

Also returning for the Midshipmen are Meagan Leitz and Caroline Shegogue, each of whom scored a try in the CRCs last year.

Navy Notes
  • The Mids finished the regular season with five shutout victories and a 10-4 record during the 7s season.
  • Young leads the team with 65 total points as she has scored off a team-high 15 conversion kicks and tied for the second-most tries on the team with seven.
  • Kyndall Wyngaard has been one of Navy's most explosive runners with a team-best eight tries.
  • The team has scored a program-best 60 tries, 26 conversion kicks and 352 total points during the 7s season.
  • The Mids' have showcased their depth during the 7s season with 16 different Midshipmen scoring at least one try.
Scouting West Chester
  • West Chester enters the tournament as the fourth seed after a 11-8 record in the spring.
  • The Golden Rams last competed at the Princeton Emperor 7s Tournament where they lost all three of their games at the event.
  • West Chester finished in seventh place in last year's CRCs when they went 2-2 overall with victories over Southern Nazarene (17-5) and Notre Dame College (19-0).
  • The Mids and Golden Rams have squared off three times this season, with all of those games being played at the West Chester 7s Tournament on March 30.  Navy won two of the three games and held a combined scoring advantage of 91-32.
