ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team swept a split-squad doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis. The Mids (21-14, 7-0 Patriot League) defeated Howard (5-12) and Loyola (2-15, 0-7 Patriot League) by the identical score of 4-0.
Navy began Tuesday with its win over Howard. Navy's No. 2 doubles team of
Aniketh Ayinala and
Jason Kim lost just one game in defeating Hassimiyou Dieng and Kendrick Lash in the first match to finish. The doubles point went to the Mids when their No. 3 team of
George Cutone and
Nathan Nguyen recorded a 6-2 victory over Daniel Dunac and Mitchell Yon.
Navy's No. 1 team held a 5-2 lead over Marcel Dawson and Michael Major when play was halted.
Cutone posted a 6-3, 6-0 win over Dieng at No. 4 singles to make the score 2-0, then Ayinala defeated Lash, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 3 flight. Play ended when Kim beat Dunac, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5 singles.
Garner was leading Major, 6-3, 4-3, at No. 1 singles, Nguyen held a 6-4, 4-3 lead on Dawson at No. 2 singles and
Zach Quattro was in front of Yon, 6-4, 5-1, at the No. 6 flight when Kim completed his match.
A short while later, the Mids would record wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles by the same score of 6-0 to earn the first point from the Greyhounds.
Graydon Buckingham and
J.J. Etterbeek first won at No. 3 doubles against Jorge Quintana and Gilberto Rivera Gordillo, then
Herrick Legaspi and
Charlie Spencer defeated Noah Castillo and Cristian Pemueller at the top of the lineup to make the score 1-0.
Loyola's No. 2 team of George Cavo and Nick Lawliss held a 4-1 lead on
Tommy Kim and
Steve Nguyen when the point was determined.
Legaspi placed Navy's second team point on the board when he defeated Castillo, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. It became a 3-0 Navy lead on a 6-1, 6-3 victory by Buckingham over Trevor Girandola at the No. 6 flight. Nguyen posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Permueller at No. 5 singles to end the match.
Navy led in two of the three matches left on the courts. Etterbeek held a 6-0, 3-2 advantage on Cavo at No. 2 singles and Kim was in front of Lawliss, 6-1, 3-2, at the No. 4 flight. Blake Edwards was leading Spencer, 6-2, 3-1, at No. 3 singles in the remaining match.
Navy will travel to West Point, N.Y. for a Saturday match at Army. The teams will vie for the Star and also close the regular season with the contest.
