INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Navy women's rugby team concluded its 2024-25 season at the College Rugby Association of America (CRAA) 7s National Championship at Kuntz Field in Indianapolis, Ind., this weekend, going 0-5.
"We saw some stiff competition this weekend. We started to find our stride, but it was too late. We are a very young squad and this trip was a great experience to build on," said head coach
Murph McCarthy.
Match Recaps
Lindenwood 31 Navy 0
Navy got off to a slow start on the day as it was held scoreless for the first time this spring.
The Lions benefited from a pair of Mids' turnovers to score two tries to begin the match. Lindenwood cashed in on its third try to take a 17-0 lead going into halftime.
The Lions controlled the second half as they scored two more tries and made both conversion kicks to finish off the match.
Sacred Heart 39 Navy 10
Sacred Heart dominated the early parts of the match as it scored five tries in the first half.
The Pioneers scored a try just 21 seconds in the second half to make the score 34-0.
The Mids' offense found life in the ninth minute when
Megan Leitz located Megan Alvarez near midfield to score Navy's first try in the tournament.
Sacred Heart took the resuming kickoff down the field for its seventh try of the match.
The Mids benefited from a Pioneers turnover as
Lara Olmsted offloaded the ball to Alvarez who scored her second try of the match in the 11th minute.
Army 22 Navy 0
Army displayed an aggressive attack early and often as it forced two turnovers in the first 90 seconds that resulted in tries.
The Black Knights garnered their first real possession of the match after a Navy turnover and cashed in their third try in the fourth minute.
Navy had a man-up advantage after an Army defender was given a yellow card for a high-tackle penalty in the sixth minute. The Mids had their first solid drive and moved the ball down the field, but the Black Knights' defense forced one last turnover to send the match into halftime.
Navy's defense came out of halftime better adjusted, as it slowed down Army's defense for most of the half.
The Black Knights continued to benefit from the Mids' miscues with another turnover that resulted in five points.
Davenport 22, Navy 0
It was an early back-and-forth match as both defenses forced early turnovers. The Panthers were the first to strike when they intercepted a lineout attempt from the Mids and ran in the first try in the fourth minute.
Davenport found open grass as it looked to score a walk-in try before a chase down tackle from
Alexis Rohrbach prevented the try to give Navy a clear kick attempt.
The Panthers hauled in the kick from the Midshipmen and ran in a second try to end the first half with a 10-0 lead.
Davenport added two more tries in the 12th and 14th minutes to put the match away.
Penn State 17, Navy 12
It was a back-and-forth battle in the final match of the tournament. After an early try from Penn State in the third minute,
Kyndall Wyngaard responded with a try of her own as she sliced through the Nittany Lions defense in the fourth minute. A conversion kick from
Hannah Brink gave Navy a 7-5 lead.
Penn State took advantage of a quick tap-and-go after the Mids were called for a non-release penalty and scampered 60 meters to regain the lead.
The Nittany Lions had a man-up advantage after a yellow card was handed to
Megan Leitz for a high tackle. Navy's defense was outnumbered and allowed a try to end the first half.
Navy scored the lone try in the second half in the 11th minute.
Arica Spencer intercepted an offloading pass and worked her way to Penn State's 22-meter zone when she located her sister
Ashley Spencer for the try.
