Juliet Frum, the Navy women's cross country team combined for a team-low score of 19 to win women's 6K at the Cantello Invitational at the USNA Golf Course in Annapolis on Saturday morning.
Frum, who finished first overall with a time of 22:28.8, led a group of seven Midshipmen who all finished in the top eleven.
"The women executed the race plan perfectly today," head coach
Kim Lewnes said. "They were disciplined in their packs early on and controlled the race."
Navy won the overall team competition with a low score of 19, while UMBC finished second with 55 total points. Mount St. Mary's was third with 101 points with Loyola and Catholic tying with 122 points to take fourth and fifth. Southern Virginia rounded out the team scoring with 129 points for sixth.
With a pace of 6:02, Frum's time of 22:28.8 led the freshman to a first-place finish by nearly 20 seconds over UMBC's Alexis Temper who came in second (22:47.6).
Senior
Samantha Woodworth was third overall with a time of 22:53.5 to lead a group of four Mids who finished in order third through sixth. Freshman
Catalina Simon was fourth with a time of 23:00.6 with sophomores
Paige Sheiffele (23:02.9) and
Madeline Palmisciano (23:09.8) crossing the line in fifth and sixth, respectively. Junior
Susanna Henderson claimed ninth with a time of 23:31.2, while sophomore
Stella Perazzini rounded out Navy's top seven with an 11th-place finish and a time of 23:38.7.
"Sam had a lot of pressure on her today as the senior leader of the squad and she showed great composure," Lewnes added. "It was an exciting day for Juliet and Catalina in their collegiate debut. What a memorable experience for these plebes, winning the race individually for Juliet and contributing to the team win in a big way for both of them.
"The rest of our top seven have come a long way. I'm really proud of Paige's perseverance and commitment to improvement. Maddie clearly put in the work this summer and her training is coming along. Annie dropped significant time on this course today compared to last year. Although Stella is more of middle-distance runner on the track, she is determined to contribute in cross country and is progressing well."
