Navy Women’s Rugby Returns Home for NIRA Clash Against LIU

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's rugby team (1-2, 1-2 NIRA) returns home on Saturday for a conference matchup against LIU (1-2, 1-2 NIRA). The Mids and Sharks will square off at the Prusmack Rugby Center at 11 a.m.

Last Time Out: at Lindenwood
Navy dropped its second-straight match last Saturday, falling 64-17 to Lindenwood in St. Charles, Mo. The Lions struck early when Irie Farley scored a try just two minutes in to spark a dominant first half. Lindenwood posted 36-unanswered points before the Mids broke through.
 
Navy's first score came in the 34th minute when Emma Magness recorded the first try of her collegiate career to make it 36-5 at halftime. The Mids kept battling in the second half when Mia Young sliced through the defense for a try in the 56th minute. Aleksandria Gabbard added a try in the 78th minute, while Meagan Alvarez extended her scoring streak to three games with a successful conversion kick.
 
Navy Notes
  • Saturday's matchup marks the Mids' fourth-straight game against a National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA).
  • Alvarez leads Navy with 18 points and is the only player to score in each of the first three games. She has accounted for 22% of the team's total points.
  • Navy's offense has been well distributed with 12 tries scored by nine different players this season.
  • A total of 14 players have started all three games for the Midshipmen.
  • Ella Callahan and Caroline Shegogue each have two tries to lead the team and are tied with second-most points (10).
  • Magness' try against Lindenwood last weekend was the first of her Navy career.
 
Scouting LIU
  • Long Island comes into the weekend with a 1-2 record. The Sharks earned their lone win in the season opener when they defeated Princeton 54-7. Kori Fields led the way with a hat trick.
  • LIU most recently fell to Quinnipiac in a high-scoring affair, 65-35.
  • Head coach Alex Artus is in his first season at the helm after spending six years leading the program at Kutztown.
 
Navy vs. LIU
  • Saturday marks the second meeting between the programs. Navy edged LIU 19-18 in the 2023 matchup in Brookville, N.Y.
