Navy Offense Slowed by American in Road Loss

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- American had three players register at least nine kills in a 3-0 victory by the Eagles over the Navy volleyball team, Friday night at Bender Arena in Washington, D.C.  American (9-4, 2-1) posted a 25-19, 25-20, 25-15 victory over the Mids (5-7, 1-2) in our nation's capital.

"American was sharp tonight and we never really got going," said Navy head coach Paco Labrador.  "We have been good all season at showing up and we fell short of that tonight.  It's a lesson we will take into the remainder of the season."

Set One
Neither team had any significant lead through the majority of the first set as the score was tied 11 times and there were three lead changes.  The score was knotted at 17-17 and then American held a 19-18 lead when the Eagles ran off the next four points to take a 23-18 advantage.  American registered two of their five aces in the frame during that spurt, which boosted it to the victory.

Set Two
The second set was very similar to the first with 11 ties and four lead changes.  It again was tied at 17-17 when American scored the next three points as part of a 5-1 run that allowed it to close out the frame and take a 2-0 lead.

Set Three
American took a 9-3 lead at the start of the set to take early control of the stanza.

Statistical Summary
The Eagles totaled 41 kills and a .293 hitting percentage and held the Mids to 31 kills and a .104 hitting night.  Much of that advantage came in the third set as American led Navy, .250-.031.

American did drop in nine aces to three for Navy, but the Eagles also had eight service errors to six by the Mids.

Farrah Eike led the Navy offense with 12 kills and a .321 hitting percentage.

"Farah is starting to find her timing again," said Labrador.  "She hit some nice shots to score tonight.

"When we passed well, Ava Toppin found ways to score (5 kills, .286).  At this point in the season, teams are committing all three of their blockers to Ava, which is the highest compliment for an attacker and shows just how dangerous she is on every quality pass."

Defensively, Ally Alessio snared eight digs and Amara Chambers totaled seven.  Chambers also accounted for two of Navy's three aces.

Up Next
Navy will play a 4 p.m. match at Loyola on Saturday.
