Men’s Soccer Has Unbeaten Streak Snapped by Stonehill

Navy Suffers First Loss of the Campaign to Wrap Up Season-Opening Homestand

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – A late first-half goal by Shane Fonseca on Saturday afternoon ended the Navy men's soccer team's undefeated start to 2025, as the Midshipmen (1-1-3) suffered a 1-0 loss to Stonehill (2-3) at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.

With Fonseca putting home the rebound opportunity at 37', the Skyhawks' defense settled in to secure the shutout as the Mids outshot the visitors by an 8-0 margin but could find an equalizer over the final 53 minutes.

In an opening half that saw the Skyhawks whistled three times for offsides and Navy block several other chances from the visitors, the Mids actually generated the first chance of the day when A.J. Schuetz turned around a shot that sailed wide at 10'. Duncan Sullivan then put a shot right of the cage at 22' off a free kick and Nate Stewart headed a corner kick just over the crossbar in the 32nd minute, as Navy struggled to convert on the opening score.

Stonehill capitalized on its first shot on target of the afternoon, as Owen Burke's shot from the right side forced a diving save from Navy's Robert Eaton at 37', but Fonseca was right there to bury the short-side rebound near the left post. Navy nearly answered when Stonehill's Tyler Sloan stopped Andrew Schug at 40' and Braedy Strothkamp then sent a long-range kick just high at 43' to close out the half.

Coming out of the break, Sullivan had another shot stopped by Sloan in the 49th minute and Schug nearly connected on a header off a long cross at 63', but Stonehill kept the Navy offense in check as time wore on, with Sullivan seeing two shots go off-target and Will Cawlfield put one high at 84' in what proved to be the last chance of the game for the Mids.

Sloan picked up the two-save shutout, while Eaton finished with one save, as the Mids held the 12-6 shot edge and 6-5 corner-kick advantage.

Head Coach Tim O'Donohue Comments
"We're disappointed to dominate the ball and the attacking territory but not be able to break them down. Sometimes it just takes one chance, so credit to them for finishing their chance and sitting and keeping us off the board. We have to regroup and get ready for a big stretch coming up."

Match Notes
• Navy is now 0-1-1 in the all-time series with Stonehill.
• Saturday ended Schug's four-game point streak.
• Saturday marks the Mids' first time being shut out by an opponent since Nov. 1, 2024.
