ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Wake Forest defense limited the Navy volleyball team's offense to 27 kills in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-11) victory by the Demon Deacons (2-3) over the Mids (2-4), Sunday afternoon at the Wesley A. Brown Field House in Annapolis. Â The match concluded the 14th playing of the Kristen Dickmann Invitational.
"Wake Forest played a very clean match today," said Navy head coach
Paco Labrador. Â "Their hitters were very tough for us to keep up with, which allowed them to sideout at a very high rate. Â We wanted to see high level opponents this preseason, which we did, and we know it will pay dividends down the road."
Set One
Wake Forest held an 8-6 lead when a 3-0 run gave it an 11-6 advantage. Â The margin stayed at a minimum of four points over the rest of the set as Wake Forest held a .265-.143 cushion in hitting percentage.
Set Two
The score was tied eight times and the lead changed hands on four occasions.
Navy held a 15-13 lead until the Demon Deacons scored the next four points to take a 17-15 lead. Â The Mids drew to within one point at both 17-16 and 18-17, then Wake Forest took a 20-17 lead. Â Back came Navy and soon it was a 22-21 lead for Wake Forest. Â However, a kill and back-to-back blocks by the Demon Deacons gave them the second set.
Set Three
Labrador went to his bench extensively right from the start of the set, while Wake Forest maintained its starting lineup that gave the Demon Deacons a 2-0 advantage. Â That difference in experienced personnel helped account for Wake Forest jumping out to 6-0 and 12-4 leads. Â
Statistical Summary
Wake Forest posted 48 kills and a .301 hitting percentage and held Navy to 27 kills and a .124 hitting afternoon. Â The Demon Deacons also held cushions of 9-2 in blocks, 48-30 in digs and 6-2 in aces.
Anuhea Hauanio-Lore led Navy with both eight kills and eight digs.
Ava Toppin had five kills and hit .400 to be Navy's representative on the all-tournament team.
"Our fans were great all weekend," said Labrador. Â "We couldn't have asked for a more energetic atmosphere on Friday. Â We are excited to be back home for more competitive volleyball this weekend."
Up Next
The Mids will play host to the Navy Invitational Friday and Saturday in Annapolis. Â Navy will play Gardner-Webb Friday and both Le Moyne and Hampton on Saturday.
