ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team began its 2026 spring season by recording a pair of victories Saturday at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis. The Mids (2-0) began the day with a 7-0 victory over St. Bonaventure (1-0) and ended it with a 5-2 win over Saint Francis (0-1).
Navy 7, St. Bonaventure 0
The doubles point came down to the last match left on the courts. Navy's No. 3 team of
George Cutone and
J.J. Etterbeek first posted a 6-1 victory over Luke Olivierre and Dilraj Singh-Dhillon, then the Bonnies tied the proceedings with a 6-0 victory at No. 1 doubles by Chase Cahill-Welsh and Connor Turner. At No. 2 doubles, Navy's
Tommy Kim and
Herrick Legaspi jumped out to a 5-2 lead over Alex Kim and Davis Matney. The visitors tied the frame at 5-5 before the Mids won the next two games to give the Mids a 1-0 lead.
Navy went on to win all six singles matches in straight sets.
Zach Quattro defeated Olivierre, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 6 singles, Etterbeek registered a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kim at the No. 4 flight and Cutone defeated Matney, 6-2, 6-0, to give the Mids a 4-0 advantage.
From there,
Tommy Kim won a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Singh Dhillon at No. 5 singles,
Lachlan Buckingham followed with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Cahill-Welsh at No. 3 singles and
Aniketh Ayinala defeated Turner, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 1 singles to end play.
Navy 5, Saint Francis 2
Just as in the early morning match, the doubles point was undecided until the third and final match was completed. Navy's No. 2 tandem of
Ethan Garcia and
Jason Kim first tallied a 6-1 victory over Mario Beckles and Jonah Ng. The Red Flash then saw their No. 3 team of Blake Lorenzo and Beau Welker defeat Zack Giertz and
Daniel Seo, 6-2. The Mids secured the point when
Nathan Nguyen and
Jake Young posted a 6-3 victory over Kevin Titus Suresh and Gregory Troyan by the score of 6-3.
A trio of singles matches finished within minutes of each other, after which Navy held a 3-1 lead.
Tommy Kim defeated Lorenzo, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 3 flight, Garcia posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Noah Potts at No. 5 singles and Beckles won a 6-2, 6-2 decision over
Kai Edwards at the No. 6 flight.
It became a 3-2 lead when Suresh defeated Nguyen, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, at No. 1 singles. Navy clinched the match on a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 win by
Jason Kim over Ng at No. 4 singles.
The No. 2 singles match between Young and Troyan was extended into a third-set tiebreaker. Young had won the first set by the score of 6-3, then Troyan forced a third set when he won a second-set tiebreaker, 9-7. Young went on to win the third-set tiebreaker, 7-5, to end a very long but successful day for the Mids.
