Women’s Tennis Has Streak Snapped at Notre Dame

Mids Fall to Fighting Irish, 7-0, in First Road Match of the Spring

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – In its first road match of the spring, The Navy women's tennis team (4-1) saw its undefeated start come to an end Saturday with a 7-0 loss to Notre Dame (4-1) at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.

Despite pushing the Fighting Irish in doubles play action with a win from the No. 2 pairing of junior Anna Jordaan and sophomore Peyton Amspacher-Philemon and a battle on the top court, the Midshipmen were upended when UND swept the singles lineup and snapped Navy's four-match winning streak.

After Notre Dame's No. 3 tandem of Rylie Hanford and Gabriella Rawles beat junior Julia Lee and sophomore Grace Li, 6-2, Jordaan and Amspacher-Philemon grabbed four of the first five points against Akari Matsuno and Jessica Kovalcik to post a 6-3 victory.

The Irish eventually secured the doubles point despite a push from junior Olivia Fermo and freshman Nicole Fu, as Sophia Holod and Bianca Molnar claimed the 6-4 win on the top court.

Singles opened with Kovalcik notching a 6-2, 6-1 victory over sophomore Molly Bellia on the No. 6 court in Bellia's homecoming match, while Rawles defeated Li in a 6-1, 6-1 score at the No. 4 spot and Van Zyl got the 6-2, 6-3 win against Jordaan on the fifth court to lock up the Irish's fourth team win of the season.

Playing out their matches, Matsuno knocked off Indiana native and sophomore Emma Gu by a 6-1, 6-3 decision in the No. 2 slot, while Holod outlasted Fu, 6-4, 6-1, on the third court, with action wrapping up via Molnar's 6-2, 6-2 win over Fermo in the top matchup.

Match Notes
• Navy is now 0-1 all-time against Notre Dame.
