Track & Field Heads to Boston, Lynchburg for Weekend Meets

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Coming off its seventh-straight indoor sweep over Army, the Navy track & field teams will compete at two meets this week, traveling to Boston, Mass., for the David Hemery Valentine Invitational and to Lynchburg, Va., for the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational.
 
The David Hemery Valentine Invitational is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday and will be streamed on FloTrack.
 
The Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational will begin Friday at 2:30 p.m. and continue Saturday at 8:30 a.m. The meet will be streamed on ESPN+ both days with live coverage beginning at 5:30 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday.
 
Last Time Out
Navy secured its 26th-consecutive combined Star victory (men's and women's) across indoor and outdoor seasons with a sweep of Army last Saturday.
 
The men's squad recorded two meet records in the 98-83 win. Matt Newell broke a 40-year-old meet record in the 1,000 meters, winning in 2:23.44 to surpass the mark set by Army's Dan Browne (2:23.50, Feb. 13, 1986). The time also ranks sixth-fastest in program history. Justin Mumford added a record in the 3,000 meters, clocking 7:57.42 to eclipse Miguel Mathias' previous meet mark of 8:04.71 set in 2022.
 
Simon Alexander played a key role in Navy's victory, clocking a career-best 47.64 to win the 400 meters. He also anchored the 4x400-meter relay to a win in 3:14.46.
 
Jason Keiser led a sweep for the Midshipmen in the 60-meter hurdles, posting a winning time of 8.08.
 
On the women's side, Jia Anderson highlighted the meet with three wins in the narrow 94-87 victory. She opened the day by winning the 60-meter hurdles in 8.45, tying the fourth-fastest time in school history. Anderson followed with a 7.59 in the 60-meter dash, also tying the fourth-fastest mark in program history. The senior closed with a season-best 24.52 in the 200 meters.
 
Sophie Compton gave Navy an early boost by winning the mile in 4:46.10, the seventh-fastest time in program history. She also captured the 3,000 meters in 9:35.90, the ninth-fastest time in school history. 
 
Trio of Mids Earn Patriot League Weekly Honors
Three Navy athletes earned Patriot League weekly honors, the league announced Tuesday. Alexander was named Men's Track Athlete of the Week, Anderson earned Women's Track Athlete of the Week and Keiser was selected Men's Rookie of the Week.
 
Last Time at David Hemery Valentine Invitational (Feb. 14, 2025)
Navy's distance runners shined in Boston last season, led by Justin Mumford (13:49.01) and Jackson Nguyen (14:03.59) in the 5,000 meters. The performances rank second and ninth, respectively, in program history.
 
Last Time at Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational (Feb. 15, 2025)
Sophie Compton highlighted the Midshipmen with a school-record 3,000-meter time of 9:25.15 to win the event.
 
Team captain Nathan Kent also had a big day at the Liberty meet last year, winning the 200- and 400-meter races. He clocked a 21.03 in the 200 and followed with a 47.29 in the 400.
