Navy Baseball Dominates Delaware State in Home Opener

Victor Izquierdo Homers as Part of Five-RBI Day, Tyler Grenn Allows One Hit in Five-Inning Start

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Led by team captain Victor Izquierdo's career-high five RBI, the Navy baseball team (3-1) powered its way to an impressive 12-0 run-rule win over Delaware State (0-5) on Tuesday afternoon in its home opener at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium.

Izquierdo was one of five Midshipmen to record a multi-hit day, including a three-hit, three-run performance by Chris Klug, while starter Tyler Grenn set the tone on the mound by holding the Hornets to one hit over his five innings of action.

Striking first in the home half of the second, Navy got its offense going by Mason Ceccarelli beating out an infield single and Patrick Walsh's triple knocking in Ceccarelli, while an RBI groundout from Tyler Cripe then plated Walsh. With two more runners reaching before Klug doubled home Henry Mitchell, Izquierdo cleared the bases with his three-run blast to the left-center power alley and gave the Mids a 7-0 edge.

With Grenn retiring 14 of his first 15 batters faced, the Mids got him some more support in the third when Klug ripped another double down the left-field line to plate Mitchell, while Klug then stole third and took home on a passed ball to extend the lead to 9-0.

The fifth saw more scoring for Navy, as a pair of walks and a Klug single loaded the bases for Izquierdo, who rocketed a two-run single up the middle for an 11-0 advantage. Andrew Manning's fielder's choice then plated Klug, giving the Mids a 12-0 edge.

After Mikey Plummer pitched a clean sixth in relief of Grenn, Jackson Beattie closed the door when he left Alec Rodriguez stranded at third following a one-out triple, inducing a Jaryn Sample pop-out and striking out Justin Batts to end the game.

Grenn ended with five strikeouts in his five frames of work, notching the win, while Plummer retired all three batters he faced and Beattie struck out two more Hornets in his inning of action.

Ryan Mejia went 1.2 innings for DSU in the loss, allowing seven runs, while Shane Carter gave up two runs in his 1.1 innings, Sean Ely surrendered three runs across two frames of relief and Jimmy Breen pitched a clean inning to wrap up the contest.
