ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Following a sensational week at the plate, Navy baseball freshman
Patrick Walsh was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Â
Walsh was a machine for the Midshipmen this week with a .400 batting average and 1.143 slugging percentage, helping Navy go 3-1 and earn weekend wins over rival Air Force and perennial Sun Belt contender Marshall. The rookie went 7-for-14 with three runs scored and five RBI, racking up three doubles and three triples for the week. Playing third base in all four games, Walsh also went 11-for-11 on defensive chances.
Â
After hitting an RBI triple for Navy's first run of the game and scoring once as part of a 1-for-3 day in the midweek win over Delaware State, Walsh launched another RBI triple in his lone hit Friday night to aid the Mids in beating Air Force, 5-3.
Â
The freshman then racked up two of Navy's three hits, including a double, against South Carolina on Saturday. Walsh finished the week by going 3-for-4 in the win over Marshall, tallying another triple and two doubles while driving in three runs and scoring once himself.
Â
The infielder has now recorded an extra-base hit in four-straight games.
Â
This marks Walsh's first weekly honor from the league and makes Navy for 2-for-2 this season in earning the honor, as freshman pitcher
Owen Phypers was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week last Monday.
