ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy wrestler
Danny Wask has been named this week's Naval Academy Athletic Association (NAAA) Athlete of the Week for his performance at the NCAA Championship last weekend.
Â
Wask became the program's 16th two-time All-American, placing sixth and posting a 4-3 record at the national tournament. He is the first Midshipman to earn All-America honors in back-to-back seasons since Joe Baker (2008-09).
Â
Wask opened the tournament with a strong showing, defeating No. 18 seed Colin Kelly (Illinois), 7-3, in the first round. He followed with one of the tournament's biggest upsets, knocking off No. 2 seed Simon Ruiz (Cornell), 9-5, in the second round to hand Ruiz his first loss of the season and advance to the quarterfinals.
Â
After dropping a 9-5 overtime decision to No. 7 seed Cam Steed (Missouri) in the quarterfinals, Wask rebounded in the blood round with a 2-1 victory over No. 12 seed Carter Schubert (Oklahoma) to secure his second All-America honor. He earned his final win of the tournament in the consolation quarterfinals with a 20-9 major decision over No. 11 seed MJ Gaitan (Iowa State).
