ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Becoming the most recent Navy baseball freshman to have a big impact on a surging team, right-hander
Jackson Clark was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Â
Clark had a dominant week out of the bullpen for Navy, recording three scoreless appearances while aiding a pair of Navy wins. The freshman finished the week with just one hit allowed while tallying five strikeouts over his 3.2 innings, picking up the winning decision twice and holding opponents to a .091 batting average.
Â
The righty first tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning with just eight pitches in Navy's 8-7 walk-off win over Coppin State, keeping the Mids within striking distance for a three-run bottom of the ninth. Clark then went 1.2 innings in relief during Friday's game against Dartmouth, allowing a hit and three walks but punching out three to escape danger. The rookie finished the week by throwing another 1-2-3 frame (this time in the 10th inning), to give Navy the opportunity to walk it off Sunday, 4-3, over Dartmouth and clinch the series win.
Â
On the season, Clark has a 5.19 ERA over six appearances, racking up 13 strikeouts in 8.2 innings while limiting the opposition to a .179 batting average.
Â
He joins high school teammate
Owen Phypers (Feb. 16) and
Patrick Walsh (Feb. 23) as one of three Mids to claim the league's Rookie of the Week accolade this year so far.
Â
Navy starts a road swing Tuesday, heading to Norfolk State for a 3:00 p.m. contest at Marty L. Miller Field.
