ANNAPOLIS, Md. --
Aniketh Ayinala and
Steve Nguyen accounted for a total of three points during a 5-2 victory by the Navy men's tennis team over Bucknell (11-10, 2-2), Saturday morning at the USNA Tennis Courts. Additionally,
Jason Kim and
Ethan Garcia combined for a doubles victory and two singles wins to help the Mids (21-17, 4-1) to a 4-0 victory over Lafayette (4-8, 1-4), Saturday at the Leopard Courts in Easton, Pa.
Navy 5, Bucknell 2
Ayinala and Nguyen clinched the doubles point for the Mids against the Bison. Navy's
Herrick Legaspi and
Charlie Spencer won a 6-1 victory over Oscar Bain and Brendan McDonald at No. 1 doubles in the first match to finish. Bucknell bounced back with a win at the No. 2 flight as Adam Stavrakas and Amar Tahirovic defeated
Tommy Kim and
Jake Young by the score of 6-3. That left Ayinala and Nguyen on the courts and the No. 3 pairing posted a 6-3 win over the team of Nelson Alapi and Will Robinson to make the score 1-0.
Tahirovic tied the match at 1-1 as he defeated Legaspi, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1 singles in what was the only one of the six singles matches to be decided in straight sets.
Bain then recorded a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win over Spencer at No. 3 singles to give the Bison a 2-1 lead. The score would be tied at 2-2 when
Tommy Kim's opponent at No. 4 singles, McDonald, retired with Kim leading, 6-7, 6-2, 3-0. Nguyen gave the lead back to Navy when he defeated Alapi, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6 singles. Ayinala secured the victory for Navy with his 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 win over Stavrakas at No. 2 singles.
Jake Young closed play with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Robinson at the No. 5 flight.
Navy 4, Lafayette 0
Navy edged Lafayette to narrowly win the doubles point.
Lachlan Buckingham and
J.J. Etterbeek tallied a 7-5 win over Ricky Espaillat and Nick McKenzie at the No. 1 flight, then Garcia and Kim outlasted Sam Gelber and Jake Magnusson, 7-6 (7-1), to give Navy the lead.
The remaining match at No. 3 doubles between Navy's
George Cutone and Zachary Quattro and Lafayette's Darrin Lerner and Nik Martirossian was tied 6-6 (2-2) when it was halted.
Kim tallied Navy's first singles point and second team point of the day when his No. 3 opponent, McKenzie, retired after Kim won the first set by the score of 6-0. Cutone followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Lerner at No. 2 singles to make the score 3-0. Play concluded when Garcia defeated Martirossian, 7-5, 6-0, at No. 5 singles.
