ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Extending its win streak to four and picking up its 15th win in 16 matches, the Navy women's tennis team (20-5, 5-1 PL) roared back from a slow start for a 6-1 victory over Patriot League foe Colgate (7-11, 3-5 PL) in the regular-season finale Sunday at the Fluegel-Moore Tennis Stadium.
In the Midshipmen's final tune-up before next week's Patriot League Tournament, Navy dropped the double point but then rattled off six singles victories over the Raiders to send the teams into postseason, also ending the Mids' home slate with a 18-1 record this spring and on a 14-game home winning streak.
Colgate jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by securing the doubles point, as Carina Cristobal and Sasha Herman struck first with a 6-2 win over sophomore
Peyton Amspacher-Philemon and junior
Anna Jordaan at the No. 2 flight. Freshman
Anna Wiskowski and sophomore
Molly Bellia answered by defeating Rebecca Hess and Avery Isaac, 6-2, on the third court, but the Raiders clinched the point at No. 1 when Amelia Galin and Sophia Montero topped junior
Olivia Fermo and rookie
Nicole Fu in a 6-2 final.
Navy quickly turned the tide once singles play began, with Bellia evening the team score via a commanding 6-2, 6-1 victory over Anya Kunar at the No. 4 flight, while classmate
Emma Gu followed suit at the No. 1 spot by dispatching Galin, 6-3, 6-0, to give the Mids the lead.
Wiskowski extended Navy's advantage to 3-1 by beating Isaac, 6-1, 6-1, at the six spot and Amspacher-Philemon then delivered the clinching point for Navy when she downed Herman by a 6-2, 6-1 score on the fifth court.
In the remaining matches, Fu rallied after dropping her opening set to defeat Montero, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3), at the No. 2 flight and
Grace Li closed out the afternoon singles sweep for Navy with a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 win over Hess at No. 3.
Head Coach Keith Puryear Comments
"Kudos to Colgate in getting the doubles point, their new coach is doing a good job with his ladies. They were a bit more proactive than we were, and in conference play that alone can play huge in a match. After losing the doubles point, the coaching staff liked our response as we stuck with our patterns of play, working points well. Nicole lost the first set but adjusted to capture the second, Grace fought back to win her first set, and all others did a good job to secure their first sets before riding out straight-set wins. We now set our sights to our preparation for the Patriot League Championship this coming weekend."
Game Notes
• Navy is now 11-0 in the all-time series against Colgate.
• Li extended her singles winning streak to 13-straight matches, while Bellia and Amspacher-Philemon both moved their singles win streaks to four matches.
• Li becomes the seventh Navy player all-time to post a 13-match singles winning streak and the second Mid to do so this season, joining Amspacher-Philemon.
• Bellia and Wiskowski have now won four-straight doubles matches together.
