ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Capitalizing on a big weekend at Holy Cross, Navy baseball freshman
Tyler Cripe picked up a pair of honors from the Patriot League office on Monday, being named the league's Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week.
Cripe put together an impressive week with a .368 average over five games, including scoring five times and knocking in five RBI during Navy's four-game sweep over the Crusaders in Worcester. The rookie infielder went 7-for-19 on the week with two homers, also drawing three walks and stealing two bases while recording a sacrifice fly for the Midshipmen.
After an uncharacteristic day at George Washington last Tuesday, the freshman heated back up in Worcester by drawing a walk and scoring in the Mids' opening win against Holy Cross. Cripe then blasted his fourth home run of the season in Friday's nightcap as part of a three-hit, two-run, two-RBI contest.
Saturday then saw Cripe get two hits and score once in the first game, while the Saturday nightcap featured another two-hit performance while driving in three runs (sacrifice fly and two-run homer).
Cripe now leads Navy with a .304 average and has hit .348 in 19 Patriot League games.
This marks Cripe's first time winning the league's Player- or Rookie-of-the-Week accolades. He becomes the second Mid to take home Player of the Week this season, joining senior captain
Victor Izquierdo (April 6). He is also the fourth different Navy freshman to garner the Rookie-of-the-Week honor alongside
Owen Phypers (Feb. 16),
Patrick Walsh (Feb. 23) and
Jackson Clark (March 9).
Navy returns home Wednesday to play Maryland Eastern Shore, with first pitch set for 5:05 p.m.
