Late Goal Lifts #19 Loyola Over Navy in Regular-Season Finale

ANNAPOLIS, Md. —  A goal by Kenan Everhart with 2:27 remaining in the game led 19th-ranked Loyola (9-5 / 6-2 Patriot League) to a 13-12 victory over the Navy men's lacrosse team (7-7, 3-5 Patriot League) Friday evening at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in the final Patriot League game of the year. The Mids used a 6-1 run between the third and fourth quarters to overcome a five-goal deficit and pull even (12-12) with the Greyhounds before giving way to the game-winner.

Loyola opened the game scoring back-to-back goals three minutes into the contest before Navy's Alec Gregorek (So / A / Wading River, N.Y.) and William Goers (So / A / Chester, Md.) answered with a pair of unassisted goals to knot the game a two apiece. Brady Quinn scored his second goal of the game to push Loyola ahead with under 2 minutes to go, but Goers spun off defender Joe Houlihan just off the right side of the crease to tie the game at 3 with 47.1 seconds remaining. The Greyhounds, however, got the final say of the quarter when they caught the Mids on their heels and scored off a restart from the end line with 0.5 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Mids' defense, playing a second-consecutive game without All-American defenseman AJ Marsh (Jr / Reisterstown, Md.) stepped up in the second quarter and held Loyola without a goal for nearly 10 minutes, while the offense took a 6-4 lead on three-consecutive goals. Gregorek sparked the run with his bounce shot from the left elbow and scored four minutes later from nearly the same spot. Ryan Landolphi (Jr / M / Manhasset, N.Y.) capped the run with an unassisted goal, sweeping to the left from 8 yards out.

Loyola answered less than a minute later and Mason Cook's goal kicked off a 4-0 by the Greyhounds to close the half with an 8-6 lead over the Mids.

The Greyhounds extended their run to 7 in a row by scoring the first 3 goals of the second half to open up an 11-6 lead.

After a 12-minute drought going back to 6:34 in the second quarter, Navy began to whittle down the deficit. Landolphi scored his second of the evening when Jack Nichtern (Sr / M / Massapequa Park, N.Y.) found him wide open 5 yards in front of the cage and Goers fought his way through a Loyola triple-team to punch in his third goal of the day to pull the Mids to within 3 at 11-8.

Loyola briefly interrupted the Navy run when Everhart fired in an unassisted goal with 6:29 to go in the third quarter to give the Greyhounds a 12-8 advantage.

Navy scored the final goal of the quarter on an unassisted goal by Nichtern and scored the first-3 goals of the fourth quarter to draw even. Playing in the final game of his career on his home field, Paul Garza (Sr / M / Frederick, Md.) used his defender as a screen to drive his low to low shot past Loyola goalkeeper Max Watkinson. Co-captain Mac Haley (Sr / A / Shady Side, Md.) then put the team on his shoulders as he has done time and time again this season and scored back-to-back goals 2 minutes apart to tie the game at 12 with 7:41 remaining in the contest.

Navy would go on to fire off 7 shots, including 2 on goal, before Everhart scored the game-winner with 2:27 left in the contest. Gregorek would get 2 more solid looks at the goal, the first with 31 seconds remaining sailed just wide from inside 5 yards, while Watkinson would get the save on Gregorek's shot with 7 seconds remaining to salt the game away.

Navy's attack accounted for 8 of the team's 12 goals, including 3 by Gregorek who pitched his seventh hat trick of the year. The first-year starter closed out the season with 38 goals, the most by a Navy player since Joe Bossi led Navy's charge to the NCAA Championship Game in 2004 with 44 goals.

Meanwhile, Goers, who played the opening series at midfield before transitioning to attack, finished the game with a team-high 5 points on 3 goals and 2 assists. It was the 17th multi-point contest of his 27-game career, as he reached the 30-point mark for the second-consecutive season (30 in 2025, 33 in 2026).

Haley scored a pair of goals en route to closing out the season as the team's leading scorer with 49 points on 28 goals and 21 assists. The 49 points are the most by a Navy player since Patrick Keena finished the 2016 campaign with 55 points. Additionally, Haley ended his career ranked 14th on the Mids' all-time scoring list with 138 points.

Navy's offense was provided a boost thanks to its faceoff unit of Zach Hayashi (Jr / North Potomac, Md.) and Colin Shadowens (Sr / Severna Park, Md.) who combined to win 19 of the 28 draws (.679) on the evening. Hayashi won 11 of the 13 draws and grabbed 5 ground balls, while Shadowens finished 8 for 15 with 4 ground balls. With his 8 faceoff wins, Shadowens became just the ninth player in Navy history to reach the 200-win mark and finished his career with 206, the eighth most in school history.

Co-captain Dan Daly (Sr / Wayne, N.J.), who was inserted back into the starting lineup at goalkeeper, led the way on defense. He played one of his strongest games of the season, making 13 saves, including 4 in the final frame. Daly closes out a phenomenal career with 470 saves, the seventh most in program history.

Mason Cook, the third-leading goal scorer in the country (3.62 gpg), was every bit as advertised, as he paced the Greyhounds with 5 points on a team-best 4 goals and an assist. Evernhart, another talented product out of Loyola's attack unit, finished with 3 goals and an assist, while Brady Quinn scored 3 goals on 3 shots. Watkinson played a solid game between the pipes where he turned aside 16 Navy shots while yielding all 12 goals to the Mids.
