ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy swimming and diving teams were recognized for their academic success during the 2026 spring semester by being designated as Scholar All-America Teams by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). Additionally, five members of the men's team ––
Lachlan Andrew,
Ben Irwin,
Gavin Green,
Finn Gelbach,
Evan O'Dea –– received the organization's Scholar All-America award.
Teams needed to attain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.00 during the spring term to earn the accolade. The women's team compiled a 3.25 GPA to garner the award for the 17th semester in a row and the men's team tallied a 3.20 GPA to earn the laurel for the 13th time in the last 15 semesters.
Individuals needed to post a GPA of at least 3.50 during the spring term and also either attain an NCAA Championship A or B cut effort or compete in a relay event at the national championship to receive Scholar-All-America honors. Swimmers and divers who met the grade-point average this spring and competed at the NCAA Championship received first-team accolades, while those who reached the academic standard and posted a qualifying time but were not selected for the meet garnered second-team laurels.
Leading the way for the Mids were first-team recipients Andrew and Irwin. Andrew earned a 3.58 GPA as a data science major and was part of Navy's 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams that competed at the national championship. While Andrew earned the first Scholar All-America award of his career, fellow rising senior Irwin garnered the nod for the third time in as many years. The operations research major compiled a 3.94 GPA during the recent grading period and competed in the 100 fly, both backstroke events and the 200 and 400 medley relay events at the NCAA Championship. Irwin, who had received second-team accolades as a freshman and sophomore, becomes the 11th Navy swimmer or diver to have been honored by the CSCAA with the academic award at least three times in a career.
Recent graduate Green earned the second accolade of his career with a 4.00 GPA this spring as a mathematics with economics major and a preliminary cut time in the 100 breast. Also receiving a second award was Gelbach. The rising senior diver posted a 3.68 GPA this spring as a data science major and competed in the NCAA Zone A Diving Championship in all three events.
This is the second year in a row in which Green and Gelbach each had received a second-team designation.
O'Dea rounded out the list of Mids who received the individual accolade. The chemistry major posted a 3.83 GPA in his final semester on The Yard to earn the second CSCAA second-team award (2023) of his career with his preliminary cut time in the 200 fly.
