ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy offshore sailing team concluded its summer racing season this past weekend with
Poseidon and senior skipper
Nico Martinez taking third place in its division and third overall against 20 other boats in the 53rd running of the Governor's Cup, hosted by St Mary's College of Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay.
Â
Starting at the mouth of the Severn River on Friday in very light wind conditions, Poseidon quickly passed through the slower fleets that started ahead of them. With winds remaining light throughout the 68-mile race, Navy stayed in shallower water by hugging the shoreline in the adverse current and timing a move to the middle of the deep-water Bay during a favorable current. Staying in phase with the wind shifts to sail the shortest course possible, Martinez and crew rounded Point Lookout into the Potomac River early Saturday morning. On the final leg of the course, they were able to ride a dying southerly breeze up the St Mary's River, finishing off St Mary's College, before the wind shut down.
Â
Racing with Martinez were senior
Dylan Pace, juniors
Dathyn Paxton and
Arik Quackenbush, as well as sophomores
Henry Bushey,
Ella Sipe,
Octavian Ashford and
Sofia Parker.
