ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team finished a busy weekend of competition at three tournaments on Sunday. Highlighting the results was a 3-0 record in doubles by the team of
Steve Nguyen and
James Thomson at the Commander-in-Chief's Tennis Challenge.
George Cutone and
Charlie Spencer took part in the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. Spencer recorded a first-round (32 players) victory over Saul Berdullas Calvino from Northern Illinois by the score of 6-0, 6-1. He lost in straight sets to TCU's Cooper Woestendick, 6-2, 6-0, in the round of 16, then was edged by Kai Milburn from Mississippi, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8), in a consolation match.
Cutone lost a first-round match to Omaha's Maddox Lundell, 6-1, 6-1, then was outlasted by Western Michigan's Jack Davison, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (13-11), in the first of his two consolation round matches.
The Navy duo lost, 6-3, to Texas Tech's Imran Daniel Hazli and Ludovico Vaccari, in the first round (16 teams) of doubles, but won a pair of consolation matches by the score of 6-4. The Mids first beat Nikola Puntaric and Mihailo Savic from Illinois-Chicago and then Western Michigan's Davison and Ceh Hui Ho.
Navy also competed in the Commander-in-Chief's Tennis Challenge at the Army Navy Country Club in Arlington, Va. The tournament featured round robin play between Navy, Army, Air Force and Georgetown.
The lone Navy win against Air Force came in doubles where
Steve Nguyen and
James Thomson defeated Alex Fritzinger and Jaden Woller-Li by the score of 6-4. Nguyen and Thompson went on to win their match against Army's Jackson Armistead and Davis McDonald by a 7-5 count, with Navy teams losing in tiebreakers in the additional two matches. The Mids would add four singles wins against the Black Knights. Nguyen defeated Jimin Jung, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 1-0 (11-9),
Jake Young posted a 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 (10-8) victory over Tommy Rainyn,
Jason Kim held off Jackson Hinderberger, 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 1-0 (10-8), and
Somei Ogata defeated Alan Ton, 7-5, 6-2.
Nguyen and Thomson completed a 3-0 weekend as a doubles team when they defeated Georgetown's Sahil Morey and Rush Slivjanovski by the score of 6-2. Nguyen also won his singles match against the Hoyas, a 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-4) decision over James O'Sullivan.
Results from the Joe Hunt Invitational were not available as of Sunday evening.
