ANNAPOLIS, Md. // The Navy men's golf team opened play at The Goat on Saturday where the "A" squad is tied with Colgate for seventh with a 17-over par 585 (293-292), while the "B" team stands 14th with a 34-over par 602 (306-296). Navy's
Sebastian Alonzo (Azusa, Calif.) is well within striking distance of the leader, as the second-year player is tied for fourth and just 2 strokes behind the leader.
Alonzo, who birdied three of his last six holes of the day, shot par in back-to-back rounds on Saturday to find himself in a seven-way tie for fourth place and Navy's top performer on the day. Alonzo's classmate
Tim Luckett (Annapolis, Md.), who is playing in just his second-collegiate tournament, closed out the day with a 5-over par 147, carding rounds of 74 and 73 to position himself just two strokes outside of the top 20 in 26th.
Danny Auffant (Sr / Bellevue, Wash.) and
Collin Alstrin (Fr / Prosper, Texas) shot identical 6-over par 148s as both players turned in a pair of 74s to sit in 33rd. Rounding out the "A" group was
Payton Cowhey (Fr / Tallahassee, Fla.), who finished the day 15-over (+15, 157).
Navy's "B" squad was led by
Josh Durthaler (So / Dunwoody, Ga.) who opened the tournament with a 2-under par 69 that featured five birdies, but a 76 in the second round pushed him back in the standings. He still resides among the top 20 (19th) with his 3-over par 145.
Hudson Mitchell (So / Pensacola, Fla.) is 42nd with a 7-over par 149, followed by Elijah Estonillo (Fr / Allen, Texas) with an 11-over par 153,
Luke Lombardo (Sr / Severna Park, Md.) with a 13-over par 155 and
Logan Francis (Fr / Annville, Pa.) with an 18-over par 160.
Navy also has four players who are playing as individuals -
Daniel Ho (So / Spring Valley, Calif.) with a 13-over par 155,
Ed Scott (Jr / Lemont, Ill.) with a 15-over par 157,
James Devore (Jr / Porter, Texas) with a 16-over par 158 and
Mason Keisch (So / Miami Beach, Fla.) with a 31-over par 173.
William & Mary used a 3-under par 281 in the second round to take a one-stroke lead over George Washington after the opening day. The Tribe was 2-over (289-281=270) for the day, while GWU was 3-over (290-281=571). Georgetown follows in third with an 11-over par 579, while Holy Cross and Saint Joseph's are tied for fourth with a 15-over par 583. UConn is a stroke behind in sixth with a 16-over par 584, while Colgate and Navy trail the Huskies by just a stroke.
Play will resume Sunday at 8:00 am with players teeing off from holes 1 and 10.
