ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The #8 Navy rifle team (3-0) posted an aggregate score of 4729 to sweep the opening day of competition for the 2026-27 season at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range. The Midshipmen edged #3 TCU (2-1) who scored 4718 points, while besting VMI's mixed team (1-2) and women's team (0-3) who tallied 4620 and 4595, respectively.
The victory over the Horned Frogs, who were the 2026 national runners-up, was the first in program history.
"We had a great start to our season," head coach
Mike Anti said after the match. "It is the highest team score we have ever had in a season opener in program history. It is also our first ever win over TCU, currently ranked 3rd in the nation and previous NCAA Champion. We have a quick turn around with our first away competition next weekend at Akron and Ohio State, but I am extremely pleased with our performance today."
Navy set the standard in both disciplines, accumulating team totals of 2347 in smallbore and 2382 in air rifle, along with a match-best 317 center shots. The Midshipmen's team totals in both air rifle and aggregate scoring tied for seventh in program history with the smallbore tally coming in two points shy of tying for 10th in the school annals.
"Our MVP and the highest score in the match went to
Tyler Wee with an awesome 1190 total," Anti added. "
Hannah Talbott, a freshman, finished just behind Tyler in second place. An incredible start to her collegiate career. We also had a number of athletes shoot their personal best, which is very encouraging."
Navy was led by sophomore
Tyler Wee, who dominated the match by placing first across all individual categories with a match-high aggregate score of 1190. T. Wee earned top honors in smallbore with a score of 592 and topped the air rifle standings with a 598.
The Midshipmen swept the top three individual spots in air rifle. Following T. Wee's 598, freshman
Hannah Talbott finished second with a 597, and senior team captain
Isabella Baldwin captured third with a 596.
In the overall aggregate standings, Navy placed five shooters inside the top 10.
