Certified Athletic Training Fellowship


The Naval Academy Athletic Association is accepting applications for multiple 10-month positions for a Certified Athletic Training Fellowship. This opportunity will help provide athletic trainers with clinical experience and evidence-based clinical education to help increase the quality of healthcare that he or she provides to their student-athletes.
 
The Naval Academy Athletic Association, founded in 1891, is a nonprofit organization whose objective is to "promote, influence, and assist in financing the varsity athletic programs of the midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy" in accordance with the policy of the Superintendent of the Academy. Through an intercollegiate athletics program that is one of the largest in the country, every midshipman, male and female, is afforded the opportunity to compete in athletics at the Division I level. The emphasis on physical fitness is borne out in the first line of the mission of the U.S. Naval Academy: To develop midshipmen morally, mentally and physically.
 
The Naval Academy Sports Medicine Department is responsible for providing medical care and coverage for 33 Division l varsity teams, as well as club sports. The department supports multiple athletic training facilities and a diverse athletic training staff to provide for the healthcare needs of 1,500 athletes.
 
Fellowship Mission:
The mission of the Naval Academy Sports Medicine Fellowship Program is to provide a comprehensive clinical and educational experience to fully prepare entry-level athletic trainers to enter the ever-expanding allied health profession of athletic training. This will be accomplished by utilizing the combination of independent clinical experiences to help increase professional confidence, as well as a structured educational program designed to improve clinical skills, develop leadership qualities and increase knowledge in the field of sports medicine. Athletic trainers who participate in this fellowship will be placed in settings to independently care for athletes and utilize that experience to improve their clinical skills and their educational knowledge in order to better prepare them for a successful career as a certified athletic trainer.
 
Fellowship Opportunities:
  • Monthly CEU educational series (BOC CEU Provider)
  • Bi-Weekly Journal Club Meetings
  • End of year Case Study or Professional Topic Presentation
  • One on one mentorship from one of the staff athletic trainers
  • Work with multidisciplinary sports medicine team including but not limited to: Orthopedic Surgeons, Sports Medicine Physicians, General Medical Physicians, Physician Assistants, Podiatrists, Sports and Clinical Psychologists, Nutritionists, Sports Performance Coaches, and Physical Therapists
  • Opportunities to observe orthopedic surgeries
  • Opportunities to observe military trainings (SEAL Screener, BUDS Training, etc.)
 
Responsibilities:
  • Operate within all scopes of practice as an athletic trainer for the team(s) assigned
  • Coverage of intercollegiate athletic team practices and games
  • Athletic training facility management per facility standards
  • Communication with the team physician and other members of the multidisciplinary team
  • Other duties as assigned by the Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine
 
Position Details:
  • 10 month position beginning July 11, 2022 and ending May 12, 2023
  • Stipend of $18,000 is offered, with an option of purchasing medical insurance
  • Licensure and BOC re-certification fees included
  • CPR re-certification included, if necessary
 
Requirements
  • Bachelors of Science degree from a CAATE accredited athletic training program
  • Master's degree preferred
  • Certified by the NATABOC, or eligible to sit for the exam
  • Licensed in the state of Maryland or eligible for athletic training licensure in the state of Maryland
