Billy Ray Stutzmann is in his third year as an offensive assistant at the Naval Academy.
The Mids finished the 2019 campaign ranked 20th in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Polls. It marked just the second time in the last 56 years that Navy finished in the AP Top 20 (18th in 2015).
A big part of that success was a Navy offense that set school records for total rushing yards (4,687), rushing yards per attempt (6.1), rushing yards per game (360.5), total offense yards per game (455.8) and tied the record for total offensive yards per attempt (6.8). The Mids also led the nation in rushing. Â
The Mids were also prolific in the passing game, finishing second in the country in average yards per catch (22.51) and seventh in passing efficiency (176.92). Quarterback Malcolm Perry set the school record for passer rating (181.6).
Stutzmann came to Navy from the University of Hawai’i where he was an offensive assistant coach and worked with the wide receivers. One of his receivers, John Ursua, led the nation in receiving touchdowns (16) and was fifth in receiving yards (1,343). Hawai’i finished ninth in the country in passing, averaging 310.3 yards per game.Â
Prior to Hawai’i, Stutzmann coached the running backs at Western New Mexico College in 2014, the secondary at Emory & Henry in 2015, the wide receivers at Emory & Henry in 2016 and was the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach at Emory & Henry in 2017.
Stutzmann played four years of college football as a wide receiver at Hawai’i, catching 148 passes for 1,845 yards and nine touchdowns.
He was a prep standout at the prestigious Saint Louis School in Honolulu, where he played alongside 2014 Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota. Stutzmann was a three-time all-state selection at wide receiver.
Stutzmann graduated with a degree in psychology from Hawai’i in the fall of 2013.
Stutzmann and his wife, Shanelle, reside in Annapolis.
