Brendan Shanahan

Brendan Shanahan

Shanahan was named the assistant coach of the Navy intercollegiate sailing program in September 2018.

He comes to Navy after a strong collegiate sailing career at George Washington University. Shanahan served as the team captain during his senior campaign in 2016-17. He was named the MVP of the sailing team each of his four seasons on the squad.

During his final season with the Colonials, he was named to the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association’s (MAISA) first-team All-Conference. Shanahan was named the MAISA Sportsman of the Year and was a finalist for the MAISA Sailor of the Year honor. On the national level, he garnered Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association All-American Honorable Mention accolades in 2017. Shanahan also garnered second-team All-MAISA honors in 2016.

Prior to his time at George Washington, he was the head sailing instructor at Noroton Yacht Club in Darien, Conn. Shanahan led a staff of 10 sailing instructors, while also developing and overseeing sailing courses and programs for 120 youth sailors. Along with organizing programs and courses, he also coordinated all the logistics for regattas at the Noroton Yacht Club.

Shanahan graduated from George Washington in 2017 with a B.A. in economics with a minor in business administration.
