Biography
As a Junior (2024-25): All-American Open Skipper. MAISA Open Skipper of the Year. All-MAISA First Team Open Skipper. Competed in 17 regattas. Top fall finishes include first in the Chesapeake Invitational and at the Intrepid Trophy (MAISA Match Race Championship). In the spring, totaled four first-place finishes at the GW Team Race, Graham Hall Team Race, Szambecki Team Race and the Prosser Trophy. Also competed in ICSA Open Fleet Race National Championship, earning second place.
As a Sophomore (2023-24): Competed in 17 regattas. Fall highlights include placing third at the Chesapeake Invitational, third at the War Memorial and second at the Intrepid Trophy. Also sailed in the ICSA Match Race National Championship, earning third place. Spring highlights include earning first in the DC Team Race, third in the St. Mary’s Team Race, first in the Aaron Szambecki Team Race, second at the Prosser Trophy and third at the America Trophy. Also participated in the ICSA Open Team Race Nationals, placing 11th, and the Open Dinghy Nationals, placing eighth.
As a Freshman (2022-23): Competed in 18 regattas. During the fall season, he finished first in the 2022 Truxtun Umsted and second in the Riley Cup, the Chesapeake Invitational and the Danmark Trophy. During the spring season, he finished first in the GW Team Race and the America Trophy, second in the Graham Hall Team Race and third in the Admiral Moore Open Team Race. In addition, took ninth in the ICSA Team Race National Championship, as well as fifth at the ICSA Open Eastern Semifinal and 16th at the ICSA Dinghy National Championship, earning his first varsity letter.
Prior to Navy: Sailed in high school with Christchurch School, winning Team Racing Nationals in 2019. He continued sailing at Portsmouth Abbey, mainly sailing 420s and FJs. Smith is from Yorktown, Virginia and grew up sailing at St. Maarten and the Chesapeake Bay. He has one sister, Caroline.
