Spencer Parks is in his second season serving as a volunteer assistant, joining the program August of 2017.
Parks worked alongside head coach Rick Sowell in orchestrating Navy’s offense. For the first time since 2005, Navy had four players produce 30-plus points in a single season (Jack Ray 33, Greyson Torain 33, Ryan Wade 33, Christian Daniel 31). Among those 30-point scorers was attackman Christian Daniel became just the 13th freshman in school history to score 30 points. Additionally, with 21 goals last spring, he is one of just 13 freshman in program history to score 20 or more goals. He also finished tied for 10th on Navy’s freshman assists list. Meanwhile, juniors Greyson Torain (19-14=33) and Ryan Wade (9-24=33) became the first midfield tandem in program history to score 30 points each in the same season. Senior co-captain Jack Ray closed out his career ranked 27th on Navy’s all-time scoring list with 104 points. Among the Mids’ 33 100-point scorers, he is one of 18 to have scored at least 75 goals. Additionally, he finished tied for 15th on the Mids’ career goals scored list with 79.
A native of Fallston, Md. and product of St. Pauls School, Parks began his playing career at North Carolina before transferring to Towson in the fall of 2014. A starter at attack in 35 of the 36 games in which he played, he recorded 79 points on 45 goals and 34 assists in his two seasons at Towson. In his first season with the Tigers, he produced 31 points on 16 goals and 15 assists before closing out his career as the team’s second-leading scorer (29-19=48) and guiding Towson to the 2016 NCAA Quarterfinals. He was responsible for four game-winners his senior campaign, including the final marker against Fairfield in the CAA Championship.
While finishing his degree, Parks served as a student assistant with Towson during the 2016 fall semester. After graduating in December, he joined the coaching staff at St. John’s College High School in Washington, D.C. where he focused on the offense under head coach Wes Speaks. Not only did he coach numerous all-conference players, he helped guide the program to the WCAC title.
“Spencer was an outstanding player, who grew up surrounded by tremendous coaches including his dad,” said Sowell. “We hope his experience on and off the field while at Towson will bring another perspective to our coaching staff and most importantly to the players. We could not be happier to welcome him to the Naval Academy and to Navy Lacrosse.”
“I am humbled and honored to have the opportunity to represent and coach at the United States Naval Academy,” said Parks. “I would like to thank Coach Sowell for giving me the opportunity to join a program whose rich and storied tradition speaks for itself. I look forward to working with the dedicated staff and student-athletes that are a part of Navy lacrosse and the Naval Academy.”
