Announced as an assistant coach for the Mids' lightweight program in August of 2022, Herrick joined the Navy staff after three years as an assistant coach with the women's team at Oregon State. The spring 2025 season marks his third with the team.
In his first season with Navy, Herrick was in charge of the instruction of the program's lower and novice boats. Under his watch, the Mids' 4V8 placed second at the Eastern Sprints, while their 5V8 came in first in their classification. At the IRA National Championships, the first varsity four crew finished fifth overall in the nation and helped the program tie for third overall in the team point standings. Successful off the water, the Navy lightweights took home the USNA's Provost Award for Academic Excellence in 2023 with a combined GPA of 3.50 over their 58-member roster.
During his second season with the Mids, Herrick continued to work with the lower crews and led the 4V8 to a victory at the Eastern Sprints before a post-race protest dropped Navy to third place. At the IRA National Championship, Herrick and the V4 crew placed seventh in the nation.
As an assistant coach at Oregon State, he was in charge of coaching the novice portion of the rowing program, as well as assisting with high school recruiting and managing the team's travel. Though, his first full season in Corvallis was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Herrick and the Beavers came back in 2021 and placed fourth at the Pac-12 Women's Rowing Championships. The following year, Oregon State repeated that fourth place result at the league championships before earning an at-large bid into the 2022 NCAA Championship. The appearance was the first in program history since 2009.
Â
Prior to coaching at Oregon State, he served as a volunteer and graduate assistant at the University of Virginia from August 2016 through 2019. As a member of the Cavaliers' coaching staff, Herrick was responsible for leading the fourth varsity crew, in addition to novice recruitment and assistant boatman duties.
Â
Herrick had a pair of previous coaching stops before getting to Charlotteville, as he volunteered with the Syracuse men's team during the 2015-16 season as well as with Washington State University for the Cougars' 2014-15 campaign.
Â
Away from the collegiate rowing domain, Herrick has experience coaching with the Penn AC Gold program during the summers of 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2021 and the USRowing Women's Under-23 Team in 2019.
Â
A four-year collegiate rower at Washington State, Herrick earned Pac-12 All-Conference honors in 2013 and 2014. He graduated from Washington State in 2014 with a B.S. in Psychology and later attained a Master's in Exercise Physiology from the University of Virginia in 2019.
