Complete Media Guide Bio in PDF Format Matt Smith enters his first season as a member of the Navy women's basketball team's coaching staff this year. Smith joins the Navy program after spending the last two seasons at East Tennessee State. The Buccaneers posted 20-win campaigns in both of his years at the school, whch was capped off by the program's first NCAAââ'¬Ë†Tournament appearance in 2008. Smith began his coaching career as an assistant men's basketball and football coach at Huguenot High School in Richmond, Va., in 2001 then moved on to the college ranks in basketball as an assistant coach and head junior varsity coach for the women's program at Lees-McRae College. After two years with the Bobcats, he accepted his most recent position at ETSU. The 1988 graduate of Longwood entered the field of athletics as the owner and operator of Smith's Sports Consultants in 2000. As an consultant he served as a personal basketball and football trainer for schools and organizations in Virginia and Washington, D.C., conducted speed camps and clinics during summers and trained over 200 athletes from the youth to professional levels throughout the year. He has continued to implement his speed, agility and quickness drills into each of his stops at Lees-McRae and East Tennessee State and has been certified as trainer by the National Exercise & Sports Trainers Association. Smith also served as a national director and chief operating officer for the Hoop Group Youth Basketball Academy from 2002-06 and was the owner and operator of the Smith and Modi, Inc., Jewelry and Dollar Store that had eight retail locations. In addition to his varied positions in athletics, Smith has been a member of the Virginia Army National Guard since 1989 and currently serves as a G3 Operations Officer. Smith has two children, Darius (17) & Danya (15) of Richmond, Va.
