Coughlin is in his first year with the Navy heavyweight rowing program after coming to Annapolis in July of 2018. A four-year member of the George Washington University crew team and 2015 graduate from the institution, Coughlin most recently served on staff at Northeastern University.

A decorated student-athlete at George Washington, Coughlin garnered the 2015 Most Committed Oarsman Award and 2015 Team MVP accolades, in addition to serving as team captain during the 2014-15 season. During his time at George Washington, the Colonials competed at the IRA National Championships in all four years. As a member of the first varsity eight crew in 2013, he helped the Colonials to a 15th place result that tied the best IRA finish in program history at that time.

After graduation, Coughlin was hired as an assistant rowing coach at his alma mater, Fordham Prep School in Bronx, N.Y. and worked with the developing the novice boats, while also assisting the head coach with the varsity crews. Fordham Prep's V8 crew won two New York State Championships and sent numerous athletes to the US Rowing High Performance Camps.

Stepping aside from coaching briefly for a stint in 2017, Coughlin got back into the profession at the collegiate level in September of 2017 as a volunteer assistant coach at Northeastern University. As a member of the Huskies' staff he was charged with coaching the third and fourth varsity student-athletes. With his assistance, Northeastern's 3V finished sixth at the 2018 IRA National Championship, while it's V4 crew qualified for the B-level final. That same V4 crew finished first and won the gold medal at the 2018 Eastern Sprints.

His responsibilities at Northeastern also included assisting and supporting the coaching staff in boat selection, training plans, drills, erg and row tank training, travel and lodging logistics and athlete mentorship.

Coughlin is a native of Pelham, N.Y. and graduated George Washington in 2015 with a degree in history.
