Paul Killian enters his fifth season on the Navy men's soccer coaching staff and begins his first season as associate head coach in 2020. Following four seasons as an assistant coach at Navy, Killian was promoted to associate head coach in August of 2020.
In 2020-21, Killian helped the Midshipmen to a second-place finish in the Patriot League South Division. Navy finished the season with a record of 4-2-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the Patriot League.
Killian helped coach Patriot League Co-Defensive Player of the Year in Matt Nocita – who won the award for the second-straight season. He also helped David Jackson to Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors, which marks the second time in three years the league’s Rookie of the Year came from Navy.
The Midshipmen also had seven all-league award winners and four all-region honorees during the 2020-21 campaign.
During the 2019 season, Killian helped Navy to a record of 12-4-1 with the 12 wins ranking tied for third-most in program history. The Midshipmen also posted a league mark of 5-3-1 to finish third overall. He also helped Navy win 15-straight games over the 2018 and 2019 seasons, which was highlighted by the program’s best start since 1964 after beginning 2019 with a record of 11-0-0.
Killian also helped Navy post top-ten national marks in shutout percentage, goals-against average, save percentage and shot accuracy. Assisting with the goalkeepers as well, Killian helped Ian Bramblett earn Second Team All-Patriot League honors. Bramblett also finished the year ranked fourth in the nation in goals-against average (0.57) and fifth in shutouts (10).
In 2019, Navy had the Defensive Player of the Year in the Patriot League in Matt Nocita and seven total All-League award winners. The Midshipmen also set the program record for most All-Region honorees by the United Soccer Coaches with five individuals being selected to the All-Atlantic Region Teams.
In his first season as the top assistant coach on the staff, Killian helped Navy to 5-11-1 record overall and 4-5-0 mark in the Patriot League to place fifth in league standings. He also assisted in Navy’s strong end to the season where the Midshipmen won the final four games to end the year where they outscored the opposition 9-2.
Killian also coached the goalkeepers where the trio of Ian Bramblett, Tyler Fahning and Michael Hurley combined for 53 saves, a .663 save percentage and a 1.56 goals-against average. Killian also helped coach the Patriot League Rookie of the Year in Jacob Williams and Third Team All-Patriot League member Matt Nocita.
In 2017, Navy battled rival Army West Point to a 0-0 double-overtime draw in the Star Game and Army-Navy Cup VI, which was played in front of 8,143 fans at Talen Energy Stadium in Chester, Pa. The Army-Navy game was the third-highest attended college men’s soccer game in 2017.
As a team, Navy ranked first in the Patriot League and eighth in the NCAA in saves per game (5.47) in 2017, and senior goalkeeper Mac Burke ranked sixth in the country in saves per game (5.41) and eighth in total saves (92). Navy was 2-13-2 (0-7-2 PL) in 2017.
In his first season at Navy in 2016, the Mids were 5-9-4 overall and 1-6-2 in the Patriot League. Navy battled in every game, and 16 of its 18 contests were either ties or one-goal games. Navy was ranked fifth in the NSCAA Northeast Region Poll on Sept. 6, 2016 after a 1-1-1 start to the season.
Brock Dudley was named to the All-Patriot League Second Team in 2016, while Sam Bascom was named to the All-Patriot League Third Team. Goalkeeper Mac Burke led the Patriot League in goals-against average (1.05).
Killian joined the Navy men's soccer program after serving as an assistant coach at Stevens in 2015. In 2015, Killian helped Stevens to a 15-4-2 overall record and a 5-0-2 record in the Empire 8. Stevens won the Empire 8 Conference Tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
Killian has a background in goalkeeping and was a three-year starting keeper at Stevens from 2011-13. Killian had a goalkeeper record of 50-8-3 at Stevens with 25 shutouts.
Killian had a superb playing season in 2012 when he went 18-3-1 with an 0.40 goals-against average, 12 shutouts and an 0.894 save percentage. He was named the National Goalkeeper of the Year by D3soccer.com and the website also tabbed him as a first-team All-American.
Killian was 16-3-1 and posted seven shutouts in his first year at Stevens in 2011 and he was 16-2-1 with an 0.45 goals-against average and six shutouts in his senior year in 2013. Killian transferred to Stevens from West Virginia, where he spent two seasons (2009-10), including one redshirt season. Tim O'Donohue recruited Killian while he was the head coach at Stevens.
Killian also played in the Premier Development League with the New Jersey Rangers for two seasons (2012-13).
Killian graduated from Stevens in 2014 with a degree in business & technology.
