William Chiles

William Chiles joined the Navy men's soccer staff as an assistant coach in January 2026.

A native of Silver Spring, Md., Chiles joins the Midshipmen with 14 years of college coaching experience, most recently working with the goalkeepers as an assistant coach with South Florida for four seasons and having prior stops at George Mason and Towson.

Chiles arrives in Annapolis following four seasons as an assistant for the recently-retired Bob Butehorn at USF, where Chiles was primarily responsible for the Bulls' goalkeepers. While in Tampa, Chiles helped oversee 15 all-conference selections, including the 2025 American Conference Co-Goalkeeper of the Year in Jahiem Wickham. Additionally, Wickham went on to be selected by Charlotte FC in the third round of the 2026 MLS SuperDraft. In total, the Bulls qualified for four-straight American Conference tournaments during Chiles’ tenure and earned an NCAA Tournament berth in 2022.

Before South Florida, Chiles had a six-year stint as an assistant at George Mason, where he helped guide the Patriots to an appearance in the 2018 Atlantic-10 championship game.

Before his time at George Mason, Chiles spent five seasons as a goalkeeper and club coach for the Maryland United FC organization. While with Maryland United, he also served as the head boys’ soccer coach at Springbrook High School for two seasons, reaching the regional finals in 2015.

Chiles began his coaching career in 2009 as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Towson, until the Tigers’ men’s soccer program was dissolved in 2013.

After spending his first three college seasons at Rutgers, Chiles transferred and became a two-year starting goalkeeper at Towson. Chiles was a 2007 NSCAA Second-Team All-American with the Tigers while also being named First Team All-Colonial Athletic Association that season and earning CAA All-Tournament Team distinction in both years at Towson.

He was drafted by the Columbus Crew in the first round of the 2008 MLS Super Draft and played one season professionally with Crystal Baltimore of the USL Second Division.

Chiles graduated from Towson University in 2008 with his bachelor’s degree in sports management. He received a master’s degree in sports administration from Canisius College in 2015 and then earned another master’s degree in higher education administration from George Mason University in 2022.
