Jamie Cook was named the Director of Track and Field at the United States Naval Academy in August of 2017. Cook joined the Midshipmen after an impressive career as an assistant coach at both Penn and Oregon, where he coached Olympians, National Champions, and All-Americans.

The Navy track & field team continued its consistent run within the Patriot League with the men winning its fifth-consecutive indoor title and 15th overall, outscoring second-place Army by 70 points. Navy scored 223 points, while Army finished with 153. The women’s team placed second with 148.5 points and won five of the 18 events (400m, 60m hurdles, 4x400m relay, distance medley relay, and pole vault). Cook was named Patriot League Indoor Men’s Coach of the Year for the fifth consecutive season.

Junior Nathan Kent was named the Patriot League Men’s Track Athlete of the Meet and was the highest point scorer for the second straight year at the league championship. He won the 200m and 400m sprints for the second consecutive season, posting top-10 program times. A total of 22 Navy student-athletes earned First-Team All-Patriot League honors—12 men and 10 women.

The men’s team defeated Army, 99–82, in the Army-Navy Indoor Star Meet, part of the Army-Navy Star Series presented by USAA, held at Gillis Field House in West Point, N.Y. The Mids won nine of the 17 events and scored the maximum points in six. Navy improved to 37-27-2 all-time in the indoor series against the Black Knights. The Mids claimed the star for the sixth consecutive indoor season and the 12th time in the past 14 years. The women’s team earned its sixth straight indoor Star victory with a 94–87 win, winning 10 of the 17 events and scoring maximum points in three. Navy improved to 21-17-1 all-time in the women’s indoor series against Army. The victory marked Navy’s 22nd consecutive indoor/outdoor Star Meet win between both track & field teams.

Cook earned his seventh consecutive Patriot League Coach of the Year honor after leading the men’s team to its 11th straight Patriot League Outdoor Championship, outscoring second-place Army by 35 points (236–201). The Mids claimed victories in seven of the 22 events (200m, 400m, 10,000m, 400m hurdles, 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay, and high jump). The women’s team finished third with 157 points and won three of the 19 events (100m, 100m hurdles, and pole vault).

Two athletes earned individual honors at the league championships. Nathan Kent was named the Patriot League Men’s Track Athlete of the Meet for the second consecutive year after winning the 200m and 400m titles and contributing to the 4x100m and 4x400m relay victories. Jia Anderson was the top women’s point scorer (26 points), winning both the 100m and 100m hurdles titles.

The men’s team captured its third straight IC4A Outdoor title, scoring 128 points at the IC4A Championship—21 more than second-place UMBC. Nineteen Midshipmen earned IC4A All-East selections. Navy has now won the meet in six of the last seven years it has been held.

Cook guided 11 student-athletes to the NCAA East Preliminary Round, with five—Pete deJonge, Jacques Guillaume, Nathan Kent, Murphy Smith, and David Walker—advancing to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. All five earned All-America honors, including two Second-Team and three Honorable Mentions.

Navy’s regular season was equally impressive, sweeping Army in the prestigious Army-Navy Outdoor Star Meet. The men’s team posted a 104–99 victory, marking its 13th straight win over the Black Knights in the historic rivalry. On the women’s side, the Mids topped Army, 107–96, winning 12 of the 19 events and earning maximum points in six. The women claimed the star for the 10th consecutive season, improving to 23–14 all-time in the outdoor series. The victory marked Navy’s 24th consecutive indoor/outdoor Star Meet win between both track & field programs.

The Navy Track & Field and Cross Country program continued its run of dominant seasons, combining to win five Army-Navy Star Meets and five Patriot League conference titles. During the indoor season, Navy swept both the men’s and women’s indoor Patriot League Conference Championships for the third consecutive year. Cook was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year for both the men and women at the Patriot League Indoor Championships.

On the men’s side, the Mids scored 242.5 points as a team, which was 90 points ahead of second-place Army. Navy placed first in 11 of the 18 events. The women posted 188 points to beat second-place Boston University by 40 points. Navy placed first in seven of the 18 events.

With the win, the men’s team improved to 36-27-2 all-time in the indoor series against the Black Knights. Navy claimed the star for the fifth-straight year and the 11th time in the last 13 years.

All four athletes left with All-American honors. Presser became the second athlete in team history to be named an All-American three times. He received Second-Team All-America honors in the javelin thanks to a throw of 69.15m.

Sent four athletes to the U.S. Olympic Team Trials: Nathan Kent (400m), Brahmir Vick (110m hurdles), Jacques Guillaume (400m hurdles) and Braden Presser (Javelin). Kent reached the semifinals as he set the school record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 45.42. Vick ran a school record of 13.54 in the first round to advance to the semifinals.

The Navy track and field / cross country teams combined to win six N-Stars and six Patriot League conference championships for the second-consecutive season under Cook’s guidance.

The men’s team won its 13th indoor title after posting the third-most points in meet history with 256. The men’s team won eight of the 18 events and broke three Patriot League meet records (60m hurdles; 4x400m Relay; Distance Medley Relay). The men had 13 athletes garner First Team All-Patriot League honors and nine receive Second Team All-Patriot League distinction. Jacques Guillaume was named the men’s track athlete of the meet and the meet’s highest point scorer. He won the 200m, helped the Mids win the 4x400m relay and placed second in the 400m.

The women’s team captured its fourth-consecutive indoor championship and seventh all-time. Navy placed first in seven of the 18 events to score the second-most points in meet history (214.5). Additionally, the women’s team broke meet records in the 60m hurdles and distance medley relay. Eleven Mids on the women’s team collected First Team All-Patriot League accolades and three earned Second Team All-Patriot League recognition. Molly Chapman was named the women’s field athlete of the meet after winning the long jump and triple jump. Jia Anderson received the women’s rookie-of-the-meet award with a dominant victory in the 60m hurdles.

The indoor regular season was highlighted by another pair of blowout victories against Army. The men’s team defeated Army, 113-68, to win the indoor men’s Star for the fourth-straight year. Navy claimed first in 13 of the 17 events and earned the maximum points (eight) in seven to post its largest margin of victory over the Black Knights since 1992. The women’s team also won its fourth-consecutive indoor Star with a 111.5-69.5 victory over Army. The women won 14 of the 17 events and earned the maximum points in eight to surpass the 100-point mark for the first time since 2014. Additionally, the women scored the third-most points in the all-time series and recorded its largest victory against Army since 2012.

The men’s team posted 25 times / marks that rank in the top 10 in program history, which included three program records (Mile; 60m Hurdles; 4x400m Relay). The Mids also swept the Patriot League Outdoor Championship for the fifth-straight time the event has been held. Cook once again received recognition for winning both titles as the Patriot League Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Coach of the Year.

The men’s team posted 323.2 points to win its ninth-straight outdoor title and 10th all-time. The men’s squad posted the second-best point total in league history behind its league-record 333 points that the team set in 2022. Additionally, Navy's score marked just the third time a team scored 300 or more points in the meet's 32-year history. The Mids won 12 of the 22 events and broke two meet records (10,000m; Decathlon). Eleven Mids collected First Team All-Patriot League honors and 13 earned Second Team All-Patriot League distinction. The men’s team also claimed all three individual awards. Jacques Guillaume was named the men's track athlete of the meet, Joshua Boamah garnered the men’s field athlete-of-the-meet honor and was the meet’s highest point scorer and Nathan Kent earned the men's rookie-of-the-meet accolade.

The women's team recorded 241.5 points to claim the league title. The victory was Navy’s fifth-consecutive conference championship and seventh overall. The women's team recorded victories in seven events and broke two meet records (400m; 4x400m Relay). Nine Mids received First Team All-Patriot League honors and 14 garnered Second Team All-Patriot League accolades. Additionally, Molly Chapman earned the women's field athlete-of-the-meet award.

Navy’s postseason success continued at the IC4A Championship. Despite sending a limited roster, the men’s team won the IC4A Championship with 154.5 points. The men’s team scored 65.5 more points than second-place Army to win the eighth IC4A Championship in program history and fourth under Cook’s direction. Twenty-two Mids earned IC4A All-East accolades for placing in the top eight in their respective event and Joshua Boamah was chosen as the men’s most outstanding performer of the meet.

Cook sent 14 athletes to compete in the NCAA East Preliminaries, which is tied for the second-most during his tenure. Braden Presser had the top performance for the Mids, placing second in the javelin to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championship. At nationals, Presser placed sixth to earn First Team All-America honors.

Cook was also recognized as the USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Region Men’s Coach of the Year after the men’s team finished the season as the top-ranked program in the region. The Mids posted 25 times / marks that ranked in the top 10 in the region, which included the fastest 400m time. Â

Navy once again cruised past Army at the Outdoor Star Meet. The men’s team defeated Army, 126-77, for its 11th-straight win in the series. Navy’s 126 points is its second-highest point total since 2000. Additionally, the 49-point differential is the second-largest margin of victory for the men in its 96 meetings against Army. The women's team beat the Black Knights by a score of 111-92 to win its eighth-straight Star. With the two wins, track and field / cross country went undefeated against Army to claim six of Navy’s 14 Stars in the 2023 Star Series. The women’s team had three athletes selected to the Patriot League’s 21-person Indoor All-Academic women's team, which included Annie Taylor as the Patriot League Outdoor Women’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The men’s team had a league-best five student-athletes named to the 21-member Patriot League All-Academic men’s team. Both the men’s and women’s teams had five athletes honored as Academic All-District by the College Sports Communicators (CSC) and Brett Brady was named a Second Team Academic All-American.

It was the men’s 12th win in program history and the eighth time in the last nine meets the Mids won the title. The women took home the sixth indoor title in program history and marked the third-consecutive win for the Mids.

Katie Halbert was named Women’s Field Athlete of the Meet, while also finishing as the Women’s Highest Point Scorer.

Despite COVID difficulties throughout the year, Navy went undefeated in 2021.

The Midshipmen competed in three intercollegiate meets during the indoor season. Navy posted a sweep of Army for a pair of indoor Stars (men – W, 101-80; women – W, 98-83). Despite no team score, Navy won 8 of 13 events against William & Mary on the men’s side, while sweeping all 13 events at the Patriot League Indoor Challenge. The women’s team claimed 10 of 14 events versus William & Mary and won 14 of 15 events at the PL Indoor Challenge.

During the outdoor season, Navy swept Army for two outdoor Stars (men – W, 103-100; women – W, 111.5-88.5), while also sweeping the Patriot League Outdoor Championships and IC4A / ECAC Outdoor Championships.

At the PL Outdoor Championship, the men trailed by 19 points with two events remaining. The Midshipmen claimed first, third, and fourth in the high jump to earn 21 points and take a two-point advantage into the final race – the 4x400m relay – which Navy won to seal the victory. On the women’s side, Navy won the PL Championship by nearly 80 points, notching the most points scored in Patriot League history (295) and smashing the previous high of 237 points set in 1994 by Army.

Cook was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year for both the men and women at the Patriot League Outdoor Championships. Clayton Thompson (’21) was the Track Athlete of the Meet and Top Point Scorer on the men’s side, while Molly Mangan (’23) was the Track Athlete of the Meet on the women’s side.

The Midshipmen swept the IC4A / ECAC Outdoor Championships for the first time in program history. For the men, it was the third consecutive win for the Mids in the meet, matching Navy's stretch of three straight titles in 1944, 1945, and 1946. For the women, it was the second ECAC Outdoor Championship in program history and the first since 1989 when the Mids claimed the Division II ECAC title.

Navy had 16 student-athletes – Cole Bailey (’22), Emma Foster (’21), Hayden Fox (’22), Jack Haller (’23), Eric Hughey (’21), David Huizenga (’23), Ann Jackson (’21), Thomas Johnstone (’21), Skyler Mason (’21), Sarah Morris (’21), Sam Orie (’21), Julian Perez (’21), Braden Presser (’24), Clayton Thompson (’21), Jadyn Tiracave (’22), Brahmir Vick (’24) – compete in 10 events at the 2021 NCAA East Preliminaries. The 16 Navy competitors are the most for the Midshipmen under Cook. The Mids had 13 competitors in 2019 and six in 2018.

The 2019-20 season saw Navy capture both the Patriot League Men’s and Women’s Indoor Championship titles. For the men, it was the 11th win in program history and the seventh time in the last eight years that the Midshipmen won the title. On the women’s side, it was the fifth indoor title in program history and marked the second consecutive win for the Mids.

As a team, Navy scored more points on the men's side (245 pts) in the conference meet than any other Division I school in the country, and as a collective team, the Mids scored more points combined between the men's and women's side (449.5 pts) in the conference meet than any other Division I school in the country. The Navy men won 11 of 18 events, including eight individual events and three relays. The women's team was able to finish with 204.5 points, claiming first or second in 10 of 18 events.

For his efforts, Cook was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year for both the men and women. Clayton Thompson (’21) was the Top Point Scorer on the men’s side, while Jake Brophy (’20) was tabbed the Men’s Track Athlete of the Meet. In addition, Caden Dailey (’23) earned Men's Rookie of the Meet honors.

Aside from winning the 2020 Patriot League Indoor Championship, the Midshipmen also claimed a pair of indoor Stars by winning the annual Army-Navy Indoor Star Meet. The men’s team won 13 of 17 events to post a 109-71 victory over Army West Point. The Midshipmen recorded maximum points in eight events to cruise to the victory in America’s Meet. The women’s team posted a 93-80 victory over the Black Knights. The indoor victory was the first for the Midshipmen since 2014. Navy won eight of the 17 events on the day. In addition, the Mids posted five school records – 60m dash, 200m dash, 4x400m relay, triple jump, and weight throw – en route to the victory.

The Navy men broke a pair of school records on the season, setting new benchmarks in the 1-mile run and the 60m hurdles. Jake Brophy (’20) became the first Midshipmen in program history to break four minutes in the mile, setting the school record with a time of 3:59.98. Clayton Thompson (’21) became the first Mid in school history to run a sub-eight second time in the 60m hurdles, clocking 10 sub-eight performances during the season, including a school-record time of 7.92.

The Navy women broke the school record in eight events – 60m, 200m, 400m, pole vault, triple jump, weight throw, pentathlon, and 4x400m relay. Regine Tugade (’20) broke the school record in the 60m dash (7.56) and 200m dash (24.31), while Chelsey Edwards (’21) tied her own school record in the 400m dash (54.79). Charlene Morke (’23) broke the Navy record in the pole vault (4.08m / 13-04.50) and Audrey Fernandez (’21) topped the Mids’ best mark in the triple jump (12.40m / 40-08.25). Ariana McKenzie (’21) set the new school record in the weight throw (19.04m / 62-05.75), while Lindsay Lewis (’22) broke her own school record in the pentathlon (3,605 points). The relay team of Chelsey Edwards (’21), Kara Kakascik (’20), Chloe Alfieri (’22), and Molly Mangan (’23) posted a new school record in the 4x400m relay (3:42.73).

In the classroom, Navy had five student-athletes named to the 2020 Patriot League Indoor All-Academic Team. The men’s team posted a league-best three student-athletes, Ashwin Briggs (’22), Jake Brophy (’20), and Sean Casey (’22), while Kara Kakascik (’20) and Sam Orie (’21) were selected to the women’s team.

Navy competed in one meet during the 2020 outdoor season before competition was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Mids swept the San Diego Collegiate Championship at Triton Stadium on the campus of UC San Diego.

2018-19
During the 2018-19 campaign, the women’s team capture the Patriot League Indoor Championship for the first time since 2011. The outdoor season saw the men’s and women’s teams sweep the conference championship for the second consecutive season. The men won the PL Championship for the sixth-straight year, recording a conference-best 289 points, winning 15 of 22 events at the meet, while the women’s win marked the second consecutive title.

Under Cook’s direction, Navy had three student-athletes combine to win six of the Patriot League’s top honors at the conference championship meets. At the Patriot League Indoor Championship, Cedric Williams (’20) was named the Field Athlete of the Meet, as well as the Top Point Scorer on the men's side. He was joined as an individual award winner by John Finnegan (’20) who was tabbed the Track Athlete of the Meet. Sean Brennan (’19) was named the Field Athlete of the Meet, as well as the Top Point Scorer on the men's side during the outdoor meet, while Finnegan once again was tabbed the Track Athlete of the Meet.

For the second consecutive season, the Navy men's track and field team won the IC4A Outdoor Championship. The men's team posted a combined score of 109 points to win the 2019 title by 42. It was the first time that Navy has won back-to-back IC4A titles since the Midshipmen won three straight in 1944, 1945, and 1946. At the IC4A Championships, Navy tallied 16 All-East performances (top 8 finishers).

In addition, the 2018-19 men’s team won an event at the prestigious Penn Relays for the first time in 73 years as the Midshipmen won the shuttle hurdle relay at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa. The quartet of Kordell Williams (’19), Cameron Hurd (’20), Hunter Wargo (’20), and Clayton Thompson (’21) combined for a time of 56.96 to win the event by just over a half a second (0.53). In addition to winning the shuttle hurdle relay, the men's 4x400m relay team broke the school record, which was set 40 years ago. The team of Eric Hughey (’21), Simon Petsch (’21), Hurd, and John Finnegan (’20) clocked a time of 3:08.78 to best the previous record of 3:08.84, which was set in 1979.

The 2018-19 season saw 13 student-athletes – Sean Brennan (‘19), John Finnegan (‘20), Emma Foster (‘21), Hayden Fox (‘22), Eric Hughey (‘21), Cameron Hurd (‘20), Skyler Mason (‘21), Kevin Murray (‘20), Simon Petsch (‘21), Stefano Pineda (‘19), Clayton Thompson (‘21), Jadyn Tiracave (‘22), Cedric Williams (‘20) – compete in 11 individual events and one relay at the 2019 NCAA East Preliminaries. Fox (javelin) and the 4x400m relay team of Hughey, Petsch, Hurd, and Finnegan advanced to the NCAA Championship. For their efforts finishing in the top 24, Finnegan, Fox, Hughey, Hurd, and Petsch each earned honorable mention All-America honors.

Off the track, Stefano Pineda (‘19) was named to the 2018-19 Google Cloud Academic All-America Men's Track & Field/Cross Country First Team, selected by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). With his selection, Pineda became the first Midshipmen in track and field history to earn first-team recognition in multiple seasons. In addition, Benjamin Stewart (’19) was awarded the men’s Coaches’ Calvert Award, which recognizes a graduating varsity letterwinner who displayed leadership, consistent effort, loyalty, and dedication to the sport and who has taken their abilities beyond the expectations of the coach, peers and themselves.

2017-18
In his first season at the helm of the Midshipmen, Cook took steps to combine the Navy men’s and women’s track and field programs into one unit, and the 2017-18 track and field team recorded a memorable season. The Midshipmen men’s team won the Patriot League Indoor Championship for the sixth consecutive year with Cook being named Patriot League Coach of the Year. In addition, Cook and the men’s track and field team picked up a Star during the indoor season by beating Army, 97-84, in Annapolis.

During the outdoor season, both the men’s and the women’s track and field teams claimed Patriot League Outdoor Championships with Cook being recognized as Patriot League Coach of the Year. The track and field team picked up two more Stars by winning both the men’s and women’s outdoor competitions against Army. In addition, the men’s track and field team won the IC4A Outdoor Championships for the first time since 1973. The men’s and women’s track and field teams posted numerous times and marks in Navy’s all-time top 10, including breaking 10 school records. The Midshipmen sent seven student-athletes to the NCAA East Regionals with javelin thrower Sean Richards advancing to Nationals and earning honorable mention All-American with a 22nd place finish.

Before Navy
Cook came to Annapolis as a 17-year veteran of coaching, serving as an assistant coach for seven years at the University of Oregon and 10 years prior at the University of Pennsylvania. During his coaching tenure, he has worked directly with sprinters, jumpers, hurdlers, pole vaulters, multi-eventers, and relays. While at Oregon, he oversaw the combined events as well as the high jump, pole vault, and men's hurdles. In addition, Cook served as the recruiting coordinator which saw the Ducks continually being recognized as the No. 1 recruiting class in the country.

In conjunction with his coaching duties, he has developed training programs with an emphasis on speed development that has been used by Olympians, as well as players from the NFL, Major League Baseball, and English Premier Soccer League. Cook is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Cook has directly worked with several athletes in the Olympic Trials and Olympic Games, including a pair of finalists in the 2016 Rio Olympics – Devon Allen (United States) and Johnathan Cabral (Canada), who finished fifth and sixth in the 110-meter high hurdles, respectively. Allen was a three-time NCAA Champion in the hurdles and posted the second fastest time in NCAA history, winning the 2016 Olympic Trials in the 110m hurdles with of time of 13.03. Cabral was the 2016 and 2017 Canadian 110m hurdles champion. Cook coached Allen and Cabral at the 2017 International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Championships in London on August 6-7.

In his seven years at Oregon, Cook guided athletes to 27 All-America honors, 18 individual conference titles, and six individual NCAA Championships. He assisted on all 15 of the Duck's men's and women's NCAA titles in the men's and women's track and field program. His athletes also played a substantial role on the conference level, where the Ducks were undefeated – sweeping seven men's and women's Pac 12 titles – during his tenure.

Cook developed six-time All-American Dakotah Keys into one of Oregon's all-time greatest decathletes. The three-time Pac-12 decathlon champion finished fourth in the heptathlon at the 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships and third in the decathlon at the 2014 and 2015 Outdoor Championships. Keys, a four-time NCAA outdoor qualifier, was joined by Mitch Modin and Joe Delgado at the 2015 championships, where Oregon was awarded the Webb Cup for the nation's top decathlon program.

Cook also worked with Brianne Theisen, who swept the NCAA indoor pentathlon and outdoor heptathlon titles in 2011 and 2012. In 2012, she set the collegiate and Canadian record in the pentathlon (4,555 points) and set the NCAA meet record with 6,440 points in the heptathlon, the second-best score in collegiate history, before going on to the London Olympics to represent Team Canada.

Prior to Oregon, Cook was the top men's assistant coach at the University of Pennsylvania from 2001-10. During his tenure with the Quakers, Cook coached 64 Ivy League champions, oversaw seven school records, and helped Penn capture a pair of team titles (2001, 2002). The Quakers placed 11th at the 2003 NCAA Championships. He was also the combined events coordinator for the prestigious Penn Relays for 10 years.

Off the track, Cook played a key role in Penn's track and field alumni relations, which helped lead to the establishment of a $1,000,000 endowment in 2003 and saw an annual fundraising total of $250,000 in 2010.

Prior to joining the Quakers' staff, Cook was a three-time All-American in the decathlon for Penn State from 1995-98, where he was also a Big Ten, IC4A, and Penn Relays champion in the multi-events during his collegiate career.

College Career
Additionally, Cook was honored as a three-time Academic All-American while competing for Penn State. He was a 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials competitor in the decathlon and competed in six USA Track & Field combined events (decathlon / indoor heptathlon) from 2002-05. He also represented the United States versus Germany in the Decathlon Duel of 2003. His personal best in the decathlon of 7,853 points came during his 2004 Olympic Trials year.

Cook graduated from Penn State with a degree in kinesiology in 1999 and then in 2006, completed his work in the executive education program at Penn's Wharton School of Business with a concentration in finance/accounting.

Cook and his wife Kristin are the parents of two children, son, Calvin, and daughter, Sara.
