Rory Quiller

Rory Quiller joined the Navy track and field staff in the fall of 2012 and is responsible for coaching the Midshipmen pole vault event group. During his tenure at the Naval Academy, Navy pole vaulters have dominated the Army-Navy Dual Meet and the Patriot League, and 16 vaulters have qualified for the NCAA postseason. Most recently, Quiller coached sophomore Brian Schloeder to honorable mention All-America recognition with a 19th-place finish at the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

In the Army-Navy dual meet series, Quiller’s vaulters have contributed to 45 Star Meet victories since 2013. Navy vaulters have swept Army in 32 of those competitions, scoring the maximum possible points in the event.

At the league championship meet, Quiller has coached 29 pole vaulters to Patriot League titles. Navy vaulters have swept the medal stand on five occasions, a feat no conference rival has been able to accomplish even once in league history. The Navy pole vaulters finished first through fourth on three of those occasions, scoring a men’s league event record 31 points in the 2014 indoor competition and a women’s league event record of 29.33 points in the 2017 indoor meet.

Before joining the staff in Annapolis, Quiller served one-year stints as the pole vault coach at both Colorado State University and the Colorado School of Mines while he trained for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials. Quiller finished eighth in that competition, complementing his 13th-place finish at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials. As a post-collegiate athlete, he competed nationally and internationally with notable finishes at the 2008 U.S. Indoor Championships (second) and 2011 U.S. Indoor Championships (third).

As a student-athlete at Binghamton University, Quiller was a three-time Division I All-American, a five-time national qualifier, and the 2008 national champion in the pole vault with an NCAA-best jump of 5.65 meters (18-6.50) that year. An Academic All-American, two-time America East Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and three-time Binghamton Athlete of the Year, Quiller began his coaching career at his alma mater as a graduate student assistant in 2008.

Quiller was commissioned as a human resources officer in the U.S. Navy in 2012 and served until the end of 2016. He currently serves as an instructor of physical disciplines at the Academy and was the recipient of the 2023 Superintendent’s Distinguished Athletic Leadership Award for teaching and coaching.

He is the son of renowned track and field and cross country coach Jerry Quiller, whose career spanned more than 40 years with stops at Idaho State University, Colorado State University, the University of Colorado, and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Jerry Quiller coached at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and was the 1994 NCAA Division I Cross Country Coach of the Year.

He resides in Annapolis with his wife, Mandy—an accomplished pole vaulter herself, a seven-time Northeast Conference Champion, and a Mount St. Mary’s University Hall of Fame member—their daughters, Kira (9) and Lacey (6), and their dog, Bronx.
