Rory Quiller

Rory Quiller joined the Navy Track and Field staff in the fall of 2012 and is primarily responsible for coaching the Midshipmen pole vault event group. In his time at the Academy, Navy pole vaulters have commanded the Army vs Navy Dual Meet and the Patriot League Conference, as well as qualified 15 vaulters for the NCAA post season.

In the Army vs Navy dual meet, Quiller’s vaulters have contributed to 42 star-meet wins since 2013.  Navy vaulters have swept Army in 28 of those competitions, scoring the maximum possible points in the event. At the League Championship meet, Quiller has coached 26 pole vaulters to Patriot League titles. Navy vaulters have swept the medal stand on four occasions, a feat no conference rival has been able to duplicate in league history. The Navy pole vaulters finished first through fourth on three of those occasions, scoring a men’s event record 31 points in the 2014 indoor competition and a women’s event record of 29.33 points in the 2017 indoor meet.

Quiller finished eighth in that competition, to compliment his 13th place finish at the 2008 US Olympic Trials. In his time as a post collegiate athlete, he competed nationally and internationally with notable finishes in the 2008 US Indoor Championships (2nd), and 2011 US Indoor Championships (3rd).

While at Binghamton University as a student athlete, Quiller was a three-time Division I All-American (a five-time National Qualifier), and a National Champion in the pole vault (2008), with an NCAA best jump that year of 18'6.5 (5.65m). An Academic All-American, two-time America East Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year, and three-time Binghamton Athlete of the Year, Quiller began his coaching career at Binghamton as a graduate student assistant in 2008.

Quiller was commissioned as a Human Resource Officer in the United States Navy in 2012 and served until the end of 2016. He currently serves as an Instructor of Physical Disciplines at the Academy and was the recipient of the 2023 Superintendent’s Distinguished Athletic Leadership Award for teaching and coaching. He resides in Annapolis with his wife Mandy, an accomplished pole vaulter herself (7x Northeast Conference Champion & Mount St. Mary’s University Hall of Fame Member), their daughters, Kira (9) and Lacey (5), and dog, Bronx. He is the son of renowned Track and Field and Cross-Country coach, Jerry Quiller, who’s career spanned more than 40 years, with stops at Idaho State University, Colorado State University, the University of Colorado, and the United States Military Academy at West Point. Jerry Quiller coached at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and was the 1994 NCAA D1 Cross Country Coach of the Year.
