Katie Patrick, who starred on Navy’s 2018 Patriot League Championship-winning volleyball team, has joined the program as an assistant coach this fall, head coach Paco Labrador announced today.
“Katie is a tremendous addition to our staff,” said head coach Paco Labrador. “She will be an immediate contributor as a recruiter. She knows the Academy, knows the volleyball program and can speak to the service component after graduation. Katie has a deep understanding of middle blocker training and brings a championship mindset to the program. There is a huge advantage when programs can bring back alumnae to coach and recruit and I’m thrilled to have Katie back at the Academy.”
“I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be back with Navy volleyball,” said Patrick. “This program has been incredibly important to me over the last decade, and I’m very excited to be a part of it again.”
Patrick was a mainstay at middle blocker in Navy’s lineup as she started every match during her last three seasons and totaled 104 career starts overall. She set the school Division I-era record with 392 career blocks and ranks second with a career hitting percentage of .308.
She and her classmates compiled a 75-46 record, including a 73-29 record from the middle of their freshman year. Those Mids reached the championship match of the 2017 Patriot League Tournament before they won Navy’s first Patriot League Tournament title in 2018 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time on the Division I level.
Patrick graduated in 2019 and entered the surface warfare community in the Navy. She served aboard the USS Higgins (food services division officer, gunnery and ordnance officer) and USS Laboon (safety officer, anti-terrorism officer) during her naval career. Patrick was awarded a Combat Action Ribbon, a Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal, two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals and various other unit awards.
