Naval Academy Athletics

2021-22 // Senior Year
• Navy’s starter at 285 pounds in two dual matches, he posted a 15-9 overall record and a 0-2 dual record.
• Made appearances in the Clarion Open, Bearcat Open, Navy Classic, Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite, and Franklin & Marshall Open.
• Went 3-0 at the Navy Classic to take first place.
• Went 4-1 at the Bearcat Open to place 5th/6th.

2020-21 // Junior Year
• Navy wrestled a COVID-shortened season that did not include tournaments outside of the EIWA and NCAA Championships.
• Made appearances in eight matches (7-1) over the course of the season, including a trio of duals (2-1).
• Earned dual victories over Cleveland State’s John Kelbly (3-2) and George Mason’s Ali Salem (17-2, 5:33).
• His only loss of the season was a 15-0 tech fall against Pitt’s Jake Slinger in the season-opening dual ... he went on to win the final seven matches of the season.

2019-20 // Sophomore Year
• Competed in eight tournaments at 285 pounds - Princeton Open, East Stroudsburg Open, Navy Classic, Patriot Open, Southern Scuffle, Shorty Hitchcock Memorial, Edinboro Open, EIWA Championship - while also making a pair of dual appearances and amassed a combined 12-17 record.
• Moved into the starting role at 285 after John Birchmeier sustained a season-ending injury following the Duke dual.
• Put forth a solid effort, but dropped duals against Old Dominion (5-3) and Army (1-0).
• Put together a 1-2 record in what was his first appearance at the EIWA Championship.

2018-19 // Freshman Year
• Saw action in four tournaments where he posted a combined 6-6 record.
• While he earned his first collegiate win by way of a medical forfeit at the Franklin & Marshall Tournament, his first win in a match was a 5-4 decision over Franklin & Marshall’s Parker Fox.
• Placed third at the Shorty Hitchcock Memorial, claiming the 7-3 victory over Millersville’s David Wuestner in the third-place bout.

High School
• 2018 graduate of Mason High School in Mason, Mich.
• Four-sport athlete who earned letters in baseball, football, track & field, and wrestling.
• Two-time state place winner and the 2018 Michigan State Champion.
• Two-time All-State (Mich.) selection in wrestling.
• Member of four consecutive district-winning wrestling teams.
• Served as captain of the wrestling team his senior year.
• Won the conference discus championship his senior year.

• Son of Matt Smith and Jessica Whitmer.
• His service assignment is Marine Corps Ground.
• Majoring in cyber operations.
• Grandfather, Ronald Smith, is a 1964 graduate of the Naval Academy.
• Brother, Tucker Cecil, was a member of the rowing and baseball teams at UC San Diego.
• Brother, Alex Whitmer, was a member of the track and cross country teams at Michigan State.
