2019 NCAA Qualifier

• Carey in 2018-19 (Jr.):  Navy’s starter at 174 pounds, Carey produced a season-best 25-16 mark that included a 5-4 record in dual action ... placed in three of the five regular-season tournament, taking fifth at the Navy Classic, fifth at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and second at the All-Academy Championship ... put together a 3-2 record at the EIWA Championship to finish fourth and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship ... among his EIWA victories was an 8-4 decision over Army’s Ben Harvey to advance him into the third-place match ... posted a 1-2 record in his first appearance at the NCAA Championship, including a 10-5 victory over 13th-seeded Brit Wilson of Northern Illinois in his opening-round match ... was ranked between 17 and 21 for the last half of the season.
• 2017-18 (So.):  Produced a 9-4 record in his second season where he saw action at the Ursinus Fall Brawl, Navy Classic and Southern Scuffle ... won his first three matches of the season to win the title at the Fall Brawl ... went on to place sixth at the Navy Classic ... earned probable the biggest win of his career with a 7-5 sudden victory over 18th-ranked Will Schany of Virginia at the Southern Scuffle.
• 2016-17 (Fr.):  Closed out his freshman year with a 6-6 record wrestling at both 165 and 174 pounds ... competed at the East Stroudsburg Open, the Franklin & Marshall Open and the Edinboro Open ... pinned SUNY-Sullivan’s Kahhar Roufai in just over two minutes at the East Stroudsburg Open to earn his first collegiate victory ... scored a last-second move over Adam Blees to win the Greco-Roman 79 kilogram weight class at the 2017 United World Wrestling Junior Nationals in Las Vegas ... easily cruised past his first three opponents - Aaron Trystad of Otero (11-0), Fritz Schierl of Ohio Regional Training Center (10-0) and Anthony Sherry of Powerhouse (8-0) - defeating the trio by a combined 29-0 mark ... he went on to face Adam Blees from the Minnesota State Moorhead Dragons in finals where he found himself down 4-0 after the opening period ... Carey, however, battled back and with 30 seconds to go in the match, he snapped Blees into a front headlock and was able to scoot behind him for the takedown to draw to within one (4-3) ... as time expired, Carey was awarded the match-winning points by executing a gut wrench and claimed the national title by a 6-4 count.
• High School: A 2016 graduate of DePaul Catholic High School in Wayne, N.J., Carey was a four-year wrestling letter winner, who led his high school to state championships from 2014-16 ... placed seventh at the Fargo Cadet Greco Nationals in 2014 and sixth at the 2015 Fargo Junior Freestyle Championship ... finished second at the 2015 UWW Greco Nationals and seventh at the 2016 New Jersey State Championship ... served as junior class president and is a member of the National Honor Society.
• Personal: Son of Sean and Cynthia Carey ... brother, Nick, wrestled at American University ... majoring in General Science ... earned a 3.18 grade-point average in his first semester at the Academy and was named to the Commandant’s List.
