Entering his eighth year at the Naval Academy, Scott Maher serves as Assistant Athletic Director for Dietetics and Sports Performance.
Navy’s first full-time sports dietitian, Maher launched the Academy’s sports nutrition department in June 2019. Under his leadership, the program has grown into a comprehensive operation supporting all 36 varsity athletic teams.
Maher oversees nutrition services across the department, including team nutrition strategy, athlete education, body composition assessment, fueling operations, supplement evaluation, hydration planning, and performance-focused nutrition interventions. His approach emphasizes practical, individualized strategies designed to support training, competition, recovery, and long-term athlete development.
Before joining Navy, Maher worked at Rutgers University, where he began his career as a Strength and Conditioning Intern in 2015. He later joined Rutgers’ newly established Performance Nutrition Department as a sports nutrition intern and was promoted to Assistant Director in 2018.
A native of New Jersey, Maher earned his bachelor’s degree in nutrition and dietetics from Rutgers University in 2014 and completed his dietetic internship through the Rutgers School of Health Professions. He is a Registered Dietitian, a Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics, and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.
