AKRON, Ohio -- The Navy rifle team ran its record to 3-0 on the 2001-02 campaign on day one of its two-day trip to Ohio, shooting a season-best 6129 to top both Wyoming (6009) and host Akron (6018) Saturday.
"We're showing steady improvement," said third-year Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "We have a good attitude right now, and a lot of the kids are showing confidence that they didn't necessarily have at the start of the season."
The Midshipmen dominated both the smallbore (4606) and air rifle (1523) disciplines on the way to victory. Bill Tolson (Oak Harbor, Wash.) led the way in smallbore competition, shooting a match-high 1160. Also designated to have their scores count towards Navy's four-member team total were team captain Luke Shank (Sr./Fort Wayne, Ind.) (1152), Mike Miller (Fr./Albuquerque, N.M.) (1152) and David Bachta (Sr./Colorado Springs, Colo.) (1142).
Walter Warren (Sr./San Antonio, Texas) led the Mids' air rifle charge, firing a match-high 389. Right behind Warren were Shank (384), Marta Jung (So./Reno, Nev.) (378) and Matt Albright (Fr./Shelton, Conn.) (372).
Navy next gets back into the range on Sunday when they compete in Ohio State's three-week long Buckeye Invitational in Columbus.
