Navy Wrestling Captures Two Dual Matches

PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Navy wrestling team scored two convincing victories over UC Davis (23-10) and Stanford (22-12) Friday night at Burnham Pavilion.
"We are happy to be 2-0 but the guys have to understand about getting better," Navy head coach Bruce Burnett said. "Some guys wrestled well but they still need to eliminate mistakes, whether they won or lost."
Seven Midshipmen picked up wins against UC Davis, including five major decision victories.
Team captain Mark Conley (Sr./Exton, Pa.) scored a 14-4 victory over UC Davis' Kevin Jones in the 141-pound weight class. Teammate Mike Bigrigg (Sr./Santa Ana, Calif.) defeated UC Davis' Ron Silva, 25-11, in the 197-pound weight class.
Navy's Mike Carbonaro (Blairstown, N.J.) won the 157-pound weight class with a 14-5 decision over Jeremiah Jarvis. Jim Letchford (Jr./Marlton, N.J.) and Travis Manion (So./Doylestown, Pa.) each won the 174-pound and 184-pound weight classes.
In the Mids' 22-12 win over Stanford, Conley scored his second major decision of the day, defeating Kenji Arai, 19-6.
Bigrigg whipped Stanford's Matt Twoney, 19-4, and Carbonaro defeated Scott Polley, 18-8. Letchford scored a narrow 6-5 victory over Imad Kharbush.
Steve Kovach (Parkerburg, Pa.) won his second match of the day, defeating Brad Selby, 3-1, in the heavyweight division.
Navy returns to the mat Saturday evening at 8 p.m. (EST) in Fresno, Calif., when the Mids take on Menlo College and Fresno State at 10 p.m.
