Sophs Spark Navy Hoop Victory

Courtney Davidson's 28 points led five sophomores in double-figure scoring as the Navy women's basketball team defeated the Pittsburgh All Stars 91-70, Sunday afternoon at Alumni Hall. The contest was the final preseason game for the Midshipmen, who will open the regular season Friday night at the College of Charleston.
Navy opened up a 12-point lead -- 28-16 -- with seven minutes remaining in the first half, but the All Stars rallied to take a 31-30 lead with just under three minutes left before halftime. The two teams went into the locker rooms at halftime knotted at 33-33.
The Mids scored 15 of the first 21 points of the second half to take a 48-39 lead, then led by double figures for the remaining 11 minutes of the game. After shooting just 30 percent from the field in the first half, Navy's offense scored 58 points and shot 53 percent from the floor after halftime. As important, Navy's defense allowed the All Stars to shoot only 28 percent from the floor in the second half.
Navy finished the game shooting 42 percent from the field, with many of the baskets coming courtesy of Navy's 21 offense rebounds in the game. Navy outrebounded the All Stars in the game, 51-37.
"We worked on pushing the ball more in the second half," said Navy head coach Joe Sanchez. "Our transition game started to work better and we had a nice inside-outside game going. Everyone did a good job looking for the open shooter."
Davidson (So., New Oxford, Pa.) scored 16 of her game-high 28 points after halftime, while also grabbing 10 rebounds on the afternoon. She was one of five sophomores to score in double figures, and was one of three to finish the game with a double-double. Bryanna Herring (So., Columbia, Md.) scored 18 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked four shots, Adrienne Roseti (So., Williamsville, N.Y.) scored 10 points and finished with 16 rebounds, Maile Shimoda (So., Orange, Calif.) scored 15 points and Alison Luchsinger (So., Lusk, Wyo.) scored 10 points.
"Courtney played very well today," said Sanchez. "All of her points came within the flow of the offense. She didn't force many shots. Both her and all of the sophomores are now comfortable on the floor and with what we are trying to do."
Navy will open its regular season Friday at the College of Charleston and next Sunday at Jacksonville.
