Cougars Run Away from Mids

The College of Charleston held Navy to just three field goals in the first 10 minutes of the game on its way to a 93-70 victory over the Midshipmen, Friday night in the season-opening game for both women's basketball teams at the John Kreese Arena in Charleston, S.C.

Navy's offense struggled in the first part of the game, missing seven of their first-nine shots and falling behind 26-14 after 10 minutes of play. Navy ended the half shooting 40 percent from the floor, but allowed the Cougars to shoot 45 percent. Navy was eight of nine from the foul line in the first half, with the College of Charleston connecting on 10 of 18 free throws.

The Cougars extended their lead after halftime, holding a 20-point cushion for the last 15 minutes of the game.

On the night, the Cougars outrebounded the Mids, 40-32, and made 27 of 40 free throws compared to 22 of 28 for Navy. C of C shot 52 percent from the field on the night, with Navy making 40 percent of its attempts.

"We had difficulty in the first eight minutes of the game and dug ourselves too big of a hole," said Navy head coach Joe Sanchez. "We struggled with our inside game and allowed too many second-chance opportunities. We showed our inside inexperience in the early going."

Courtney Davidson (So., New Oxford, Pa.) scored the first-eight points of the game for the Midshipmen and drilled four three-point field goals after halftime on her way to a career-high 28-point effort. Maile Shimoda (So., Orange, Calif.) recorded 10 points and tied Davidson with a team-high three assists.

"Courtney did a very good job for us at guard," said Sanchez. "We gave her the opportunities and she executed in those spots."

Navy will continue its season-opening road trip Sunday when the Mids play at Jacksonville in a 2 p.m. contest.
